In creating an artwork many materials are used and one of those is wood, which is used for framing, installation, sculpture, and furniture making.
Wood art and furniture making utilizes hardwood, softwood as well as domesticated and tropical wood. Hardwoods are angiosperms, it is broad-leaved, used in but not limited to flooring, utensils, construction and furniture. Softwoods are gymnosperms used in furniture making, millwork and in making papers. Many of these woods are hazardous by themselves but some are treated with hazardous chemicals such as pesticides and preservatives.
People working in the wood industry are at risk of developing nose, sinus, throat, lung, and skin conditions. Health problems may take a long time to develop so people who have worked with the said industry have the greater chance to develop such diseases.
Working with softwood is least likely to cause any health related hazards compared to hardwood. Hazards caused by hardwood dust include skin allergies, eye inflammation, hay fever, asthma, cough and other respiratory diseases. Some hardwood excrete toxins that can cause a variety of symptoms including but not limited to headaches, salivation, thirst, restlessness, nausea, vomiting and irregular heart beat. Prolonged inhalation of hardwood dust can cause nasal sinus adenocarcinoma.
Hazardous airborne wood dust can be generated by, hand sanding, machine sanding, machining, band sawing, table sawing, routing, woodturning, copy lathing, dry sweeping dusty floors, emptying dust filter bags, and using compressed air to dislodge dust. In reducing the risk of being exposed to wood dust hazards control measures are taken in the preferred order:
1. Elimination, wood dust is outsourced to another workplace with adequate controls.
2. Substitution, replacing the more hazardous wood with less hazardous ones.
