Change to the Online CRB Check Process

Changes are afoot in the online CRB check process, with updates planned for early 2013 which will impact on five million people over the next five years.

The changes are due to be implemented as a result of a recent government review into the way criminal record checks are being made. The review found that the current process, although effective in the first instance, does not make it easy for employers to check the criminal status of an employee over time after the initial check has been carried out. As a result of the review, the Criminal Records Bureau is in the process of creating a new system, with the prototype now ready for testing.

Once fully integrated, with an expected implementation date of early 2013, the new online check system will provide the means for an employer to carry out a check online to see whether relevant criminal information has come to the fore in the time since the original check took place. However, additional checks can only take place with the permission of the individual involved.

The new online CRB check system will have benefits for both employer and employee. If they choose to opt into the scheme then employees will have the advantage of a completely up to date CRB check which they will be able to take with them from employer to employer, without having to pay for a new check every time. Employers will also benefit from a swifter, cheaper process, as they will be able to check the details of an existing CRB certificate, safe in the knowledge that the details have been regularly updated.

The new system will be entirely optional, and it will be the decision of the employee rather than the employer whether or not they opt in. The underlying principle of any CRB check is to respect the privacy of the individual in question. This principle is not set to change.

The decision will be made by the individual whether or not they wish to join the online CRB check update service at the same time as they apply for the initial CRB check, and as is the current procedure, at this point payment will have to be made. Once payment has cleared then if the individual opted into the online updates, they will receive an ID number which is entirely unique to them. They are then free to log into their online account at anytime.
