A productive workforce tends to be a happy one, so it is worth taking steps to ensure satisfaction levels among staff are kept at a high level. There are many factors that can impact on employees' feelings about the workplace, but with, a little time and effort, staff motivation can be easily boosted.

It should be of little surprise that wages are often a driving factor behind how satisfied workers are. However, while implementing regular pay increases can be difficult - especially in a constrained financial climate - there are other ways to provide monetary rewards that will keep your team happy. Seeking out employee schemes that provide staff with gift vouchers redeemable at high street stores may prove to be a more competitive means of rewarding their efforts, as opposed to introducing a wholesale pay increase.

Alternatively, you may want to consider setting up a saving programme - something that can be useful in the run-up to Christmas - or introducing a scheme to recognise those who have given many years of loyal service with a gift card.

As a general rule, workers like to know that the effort they put in on a daily basis will be recognised beyond their standard salary. Indeed, one of the factors that can have the most damaging impact on staff retention is employees feeling that they are not being rewarded for always doing their best, as opposed to just turning up and doing the bare minimum each day.

Implement a programme where the person who has achieved the highest sales figures for the month or who has shown an exemplary level of customer service is given a financial reward and you will soon see employees' commitment to giving 100 per cent is renewed. This, in turn, can ensure that they are happier and see their overall levels of motivation rise.

No matter what methods you are thinking of using as a way to improve satisfaction levels, it is worth first spending some time talking with staff to gauge what rewards they would like to see and what their concerns are. Regardless of the size of your business or the industry you operate in, employees want to know that any issues they have will be listened to and taken onboard by senior management.
