Why Counting Personal Training Clients Is Pointless

Someone asked me "How many clients you got" to which I replied without thinking "I don't count clients, I count money!"

Even though when you first become a personal trainer, it becomes a real landmark to how well you are doing, counting clients is doomed to failure because there is only so many hours in the day, only so many hours clients will train at and only so many clients that you can physically do in a day. My busiest week was 48, sounds better than it was, I was totally exhausted and couldn't help but feel that the final few didn't get the usual high standard. We need to also take into account our own energy levels, particularly if you are an outdoor personal trainer, how many times can you actually take another client out running?

So how can you switch from counting clients to counting money?

- Charge Big

Why not design a real elite level personal training package and market it in the right circles for top whack? Suddenly, it doesn't matter if you've only got 4 clients in a day if they are paying £60 per hour on auto debit.

- Start a large group exercise (Bootcamp or whatever you call it)

Lets say you have a fitness camp, training 3 times a week and you charge £50 for it. You work the same 3 hours each week but the more you have in there, the more you get paid, it's a no brainer really. A personal training business without some kind of a group exercise program is seriously missing the boat and leaving money on the table.

- Sell Products

You can sell nutritional supplements, exercise equipment, keep it fitness related as you will have a pre defined market for it, workout the profit and track it. You can also become an affiliate for sports nutrition companies, then you don't even have to handle any stock.

- Get other trainers to work for you

If you get your marketing right, set a couple of trainers up under your brand, look after them and help them develop, they get work out of it and you get a cut of the action without actually doing anything operational.
