Thanksgiving Food Ideas for Kids

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to gather your entire family together to discuss what you are thankful for while making some exciting (and edible) food crafts. And while these craft ideas have children in mind, they are perfect for all family members to make during the holiday season. You can also use these ideas in classroom environments or as school treats before the Thanksgiving holiday break.

The great thing about this Thanksgiving craft idea is that you can use your own sugar cookie recipe or pre-made dough that you purchase at your local grocery store, according to familyfun.go.com. Start by baking corncob-shaped cookies that are about four inches long. Have children top the cookies with a decent amount of icing and then use red, orange, yellow and brown candies, such as M&M's or Reese's Pieces, to create the corn kernels (see Reference 1). To complete the corn cookies, have kids add the husks using green fruit leather. Children will love making and eating these colorful cookies. And you can use this food craft as a teachable moment to share the story about the corn gifts the Native Americans brought to the settlers at the first Thanksgiving meal.

This food craft idea comes from freekidscrafts.com and produces adorable cupcakes that feature a 100-calorie snack, Peanut Butter Cookie Crisp, as tail feathers. After baking cupcakes, let children ice them with orange icing. Next, kids will need to insert five cookies on one side to create the base of the tail feathers. Then they will use icing to “glue” the turkey’s head, another Peanut Butter Cookie Crisp, on the opposite side of the tail feathers and then "glue" on small, colorful candies as eyes. Have children stick a row of candy corns (base side down) in front of the tail feathers. The last step is to attach a candy corn beak using icing. One tip with this food craft idea is to be sure you make plenty, because both children and adults will love this Thanksgiving treat.

This delicious food craft idea serves two purposes—it makes a delightful centerpiece as well as a healthy snack for kids or guests. Use a melon as the turkey's body and use a toothpick to attach a Bosc pear as a head (see Reference 3). Now it is time to make the tail feathers. Depending on the ages of the children, assist them in cutting fresh fruit into bite-sized chunks, along with some cheeses. Give the kids bamboo skewers so they can make the kabob “tail feathers” by alternating fruit and cheese. When you're finished, let the children stick the skewers into the melon in a fan shape on one side. Give the turkey a face with some raisins that you adhere with a portion of a toothpick. Children can use cut cheese to make the beak and a red bell pepper to give the turkey its wattle. They can also make turkey feet by using bell peppers and cutting them to resemble the turkey's clawed feet.
