Candy Crafts for Kids

If you're overwhelmed with Christmas candy, use it to create festive kids' crafts. Holiday candy does more than provide a sugar rush to the children. There are a number of Christmas craft activities children can make to create holiday decorations for the home; they also work well for kids' Christmas parties. Encourage children to use their creativity to expand on the crafts for more entertainment.

Christmas Candy Kabobs
Wooden skewers create the base for this Christmas candy craft. Gather a variety of different Christmas candies to use on the kabobs. Soft candies work best because you can slide them right onto the skewer. Hard candies with a hole in the middle also work. Set out bowls of the candies and let the children thread the candy onto the skewer in whatever pattern they want. If you're doing this craft at a kids' Christmas party, have some large plastic baggies on hand so the kids can take their candy kabobs home.

Candy Tree
A Styrofoam cone creates the base for a candy Christmas tree. Craft stores sell Styrofoam cones in a variety of sizes. Use any size cone, depending on how large you want your finished product. Wrapped candies are placed onto the cone to cover it completely, using either hot glue or straight pins to hold the candies in place. Another option is to cover the Styrofoam with frosting and press unwrapped candies into it to hold them in place. For a smaller version, use a sugar cone as the base.

Gumdrop Creations
Gumdrops are a common sight around the holidays. They also work well in crafts because they are easy to cut and mold into different shapes. A little dab of icing will hold gumdrops together. Let the kids create their own sculptures and creatures. Encourage them to create Christmas items, such as snowmen or Christmas trees. Gumdrops also add dimension to a gingerbread house or train.

Candy Necklaces
Use Christmas candy to create a candy necklace. A plastic needle lets the kids string soft Christmas candy without getting hurt; or use hard candies with holes in the middle. As an alternative, lay out a long piece of plastic wrap and place the candies in a line. Wrap up the candy and use pieces of ribbon to tie between each candy for decoration and to hold them in place.
