Tips to Make Snowflakes

The art of making paper snowflakes begins with a square piece of paper. You can generally make two snowflakes from an 8 1/2-by-11-inch sheet of paper after cutting the paper into two 4-by-4-inch squares. You can decorate the snowflakes with a bit of glue and glitter to hang them around the house or on the holiday tree. Alternatively, use them as stencils to add snowflakes to a window.

To cut snowflakes from paper, gather the supplies:

Things You'll Need

Paper cut to equal-sized squares
Ruler
Pencil
Scissors

Step 1: Cut Squares
Start with a square piece of paper of any size. You can cut two 4-inch squares from an 8-1/2-by-11-inch piece of paper or cut one single snowflake with equal side measurements from 5-inch squares all the way up to 8 1/2-inch squares from a single sheet. Lay a ruler on a piece of paper to trace the square's dimensions onto the paper with a pencil. Cut the square.

Step 2: First Fold
Fold the square in half diagonally to form an isosceles triangle.

Step 3: Second Fold
Fold the triangle in half again diagonally to create another 90-degree triangle.

Step 4: Fold in Thirds
Arrange the triangle so that its longest side serves as its base. Fold the triangle in thirds, one section forward and one section to the back. When finished, the paper should have two triangle tails at the base.

Step 5: Make Cuts on Folds
Cut the bottom tails off to form another triangle, and then cut into the folds on all sides of the folded paper without cutting through the imaginary middle line.

Step 6: Snowflake Reveal
Open the folds to reveal your snowflake.

Tip

Cut different shapes from the folds to produce distinctive snowflakes. Flatten them between the pages of a large book. Cover with a light wash of white glue and glitter.
Warning

Do not leave children unattended while cutting out snowflakes from paper or while stenciling them onto windows.
Window Stencil Snowflakes

To add snowflakes to a window, you can use your cut paper snowflakes as stencils, dabbing a bit of white tempera paint into the cutout areas after taping the different-sized stencils to the window. Remove the stencils after the paint has dried for a flurry of snowflakes on your windows. After the holiday season has passed, scrape the paint from the window with a utility razor or one-sided craft razor blade and clean as you normally would.

Things You'll Need

Cut-out paper snowflakes
Newsprint, plastic sheeting or dropcloth
Glass cleaner
Paper towels
Scissors
Sponge cut into dabbing squares
White liquid tempera paint
Paper plate
Masking tape
Step 1
Cut out snowflakes of various sizes and shapes to serve as stencils.

Step 2
Set a dropcloth, newspapers or plastic sheeting beneath the window designated for the snowflakes.

Step 3
Clean the window thoroughly with glass cleaner and paper towels. Let it dry.

Step 4
Cut a sponge into 1- or 2-inch sizes shapes for dabbing the paint.

Step 5
Tape the outsides edges of the cut snowflakes to the window so that they lay flat or roll up bits of tape to make it double-sided to hold the snowflake against the window. Arrange the snowflakes as if they are falling from the sky.

Step 6
Pour a bit of white tempera paint onto a paper plate. Wet the sponge pieces with water and wring them out so that they are damp, but not dripping water. Lightly dab the sponges into the paint. Holding the non-painted side of the sponge, lightly tap the sponge over the stencil in the cut-out areas. Let the paint dry thoroughly before removing the snowflake stencils.

Tip

You can also dab around the outer edge of the snowflake for a different look. Lightly tap the sponge in an up-and-down motion without squeezing so much paint onto the window that it drips. You can also use spray-on snow in place of white tempera paints.
