Send Picture From Gmail as Text Message

Texting has become part of the American culture, as familiar to people as customized ringtones and wireless technology. Texting images and even small videos or audio files to cell phones has proved to be a useful feature. Fortunately, even if you are not near your cell phone, you can send a picture to a cell phone as a text message. Any email provider, including the free and powerful email client Gmail, can perform this task.

Carriers and MMS
Many cell phone service providers allow you to email a short message service, known as an SMS or text, to a cell phone from any email address. Some carriers even permit median message service texts, allowing you to attach an image or small file with the text message. Two of the most popular cell phone service providers, Verizon and AT&T, are among those that allow MMS emails to cell phones on their networks.

Gmail
To send a picture message to someone's cell phone, open a new email in Gmail by clicking the "Compose Mail" icon. In the address section labeled "To:," type the 10-digit phone number of the cell phone you are messaging. Then follow the number with the transit address for the carrier of the cell phone you are messaging. For example, if you are picture-messaging a Verizon phone, you would then follow it with "@vzwpix.com"; for AT&T numbers, you would end with "@mms.att.net". Have the message's recipient check the phone's user manual or contact the cell phone carrier if you are unsure of whether that phone and plan support MMS and to find the correct transit address.

Attach the picture to the email either by clicking and dragging the image icon to the area below the subject line or by using Gmail's "Attach a File" interface. Type your message into the body of the email, and click the "Send" button.

Charges
While it is free for the person emailing the picture message to perform this action, the cell phone user may incur a charge if that person does not have MMS included in the phone's service plan. If cell phone users do not want to incur the charge, they may simply choose not to open such messages or download such attachments. When using email to send pictures to the cell phones of friends and loved ones, it is courteous to avoid using this feature frequently unless you have received approval from the cell phone user.

Backup MMS to Gmail
In addition to being able to email a picture message to a cell phone, the Android operating system has apps that allow you to back up any MMS messages you receive on your phone onto Gmail. This is useful if a friend texted you a picture of his new baby and you want to save the picture to put it in a digital album at home or to print a copy. A few apps are available for this purpose in Android Market, with the most popular being "Backup to Gmail."
