Having lots of email addresses can be more trouble than it is worth if you do not really use them. You can delete your Gmail address whenever you need to and have one less mailbox to manage. Deleting a Gmail address is permanent, so make sure it is what you want to do.
Closing a Gmail Account
As a Gmail user, you can close your account anytime you no longer want to use your email address. Within two business days of taking this action, your Gmail address will be deactivated, you will no longer be able to sign in to it and its mailbox will stop receiving mail. It may take up to 60 days for all your email and account details to disappear from the active Gmail system and may remain in system backups. Once your Gmail account is closed, you will not be able to create another Gmail address with that name.
Effect of Closing a Gmail Account
Deleting your Gmail account will not cause you to lose other Google products that you have used with the same Google account so long as you keep the latter open. But any product or service that you have associated with your Gmail address may be affected since you may need it in account maintenance or password recovery. For example, if you have associated Gmail with an online gaming account and you forget the password for the latter, you might not be able to ever regain access to it. Do not close Gmail unless you are quite sure that you will never need it for anything.
How to Close a Gmail Account
To close your Gmail account, sign into Gmail and click the gear icon in the top right of the page. Click "Mail settings" and then click "Accounts and import." Click "Other Google Account settings." Click "Edit" next to "My products." (If you do not see my products, you may be using Google+ and if so, click "Visit the previous version of the Google accounts screen" first.) Click "Remove Gmail permanently." Check the confirmation box, enter a new email address to sign in with to your Google account and type your current password. Click "Remove Gmail."
Gmail Account Recovery
If you close your Gmail account and then change your mind, the Google team will try to restore it for you upon your request. However you only have a small window of time in which to attempt this. Gmail accounts that have been closed for a couple of weeks or more are usually irrecoverable. In the event of a successful recovery, only the Gmail username can be restored, not the mail or other content.
Google vs. Gmail Accounts
There may come a time when you would prefer to delete your main Google account rather than just Gmail. Closing your Google account will automatically remove Gmail and other Google products connected with that account as well, such as Blogger blogs, iGoogle home page and Google Calendar. Some products are affected differently, though. For example, an AdSense account will remain open yet inaccessible and you must submit a request to close it. Any document you have shared with Google Docs will become inaccessible to others unless they save copies of those files first.
