How to Paint Your Surfboards

Sometimes artwork is painted onto a surfboard while it is in the workshop, but if you have a blank surfboard, you can paint it yourself. Painting a surfboard with a personal design gives it a unique stamp, so create a piece of artwork yourself and then paint it onto your surfboard. While painting a surfboard will do nothing to improve its performance, if painted well, it will be an eye-catching display at the beach.

If the surfboard to be painted is brand new with a sanded finish, move to step 4. If the surfboard is brand new with a gloss finish, begin at step 3. If the surfboard has been used, continue to step 2.

Scrape off all the wax on the surfboard using a wax removal tool. When all wax is removed, rub the surfboard all over using the white spirit and a clean cloth. This will remove any remnants of wax and thoroughly clean the surfboard.

Apply masking tape to any areas of the surfboard that are not intended to be painted. The tail grip, rails and previous artwork are things to consider protecting with masking tape.

Shake the spray paint can or paint pen before using to make sure the paint is mixing sufficiently. Carefully apply the paint to the surfboard and complete the design you have chosen.

If different color paints are being applied in layers, wait until each layer is completely dry before painting the next layer.

Once the painting is finished, give it sufficient time to dry. Do not touch or move the surfboard until you are sure the paint is dry.

Apply a light coating of clear acrylic coating spray to the painting on the surfboard. Remove all tape and then apply a second light coating of clear acrylic coating spray. This will seal and protect the painting.

Leave the board untouched for 24 hours to make sure the painting is completely sealed by the acrylic coating. When completely dry the surfboard can be waxed again, and then taken into the water to surf.
