The typical board stance in surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding has your left foot in front and the right in back. However, some people are more comfortable with their right foot in front for surfing-- a stance called “goofy foot.” You won’t be able to tell if you’re goofy- or regular-footed from traits like being left- or right-handed, so you have to test yourself first to see which is your preferred surfing stance.
Tests and Results
Testing to find your preferred stance doesn’t take long, but some of the tests can give you conflicting results. For example, one test is to remember which foot you use to kick something -- Transworld Snowboarding says your kicking foot should be your back foot on the board. But Tactics.com provides another test in which you step onto the board, with the first foot you place on the board becoming the front foot. If you kick with your right foot but also step first with your right foot, for example, you’d end up with two different results. Another test is to have someone gently push you from behind, and the foot you use to steady yourself would be your front foot on the board. Both Tactics.com and SurferToday.com suggest using the push test.
Comfort and Stability
Regardless of test results, though, what really counts is your comfort level and how steady your stance feels when you participate in a particular sport. Tactics.com advises that some people have different stance preferences for different activities. If you step onto surf- and skateboards with your right foot first -- which would indicate you’re goofy foot for both -- but you feel more comfortable with your left foot forward during surfing, you’d be regular foot for surfing and goofy foot for skateboarding.
