Configure Facebook Chat With XMPP

Although you can use Facebook Chat while in the browser, you can also configure a XMPP-based chat client, such as Adium or Pidgin, to use the Facebook service. In fact, the company encourages third-party developers to use the XMPP method to connect with the site's chat servers. Once you have XMPP configured to Facebook Chat, then you'll be able to connect and chat with your Facebook friends through the client software. The steps may slightly differ from one client to another, but the basic principles remain the same.

Instructions
Step 1

Launch the XMPP chat client and add a new account.

Step 2

Select "Jabber" from the available chat protocol options. Even if there is an option for a Facebook account, you should select Jabber as it is compatible with the XMPP protocol.

Step 3
Type your Facebook username. You can get your username by going to your Facebook profile and looking at the profile link in the address bar. For example, "facebook.com/example" is the profile link, but "example" is the username.

Step 4

Type "@chat.facebook.com" (without quotes) directly behind the username on the same line.

Step 5
Set the chat server to "chat.facebook.com." When done, click the "Save," "Add" or "OK" button, which depends on the particular chat client software you are using.
