Information on Facebook Contacts

Facebook stores your contacts after you give it permission to do so. It is a synchronization feature included with the Facebook mobile app, and the terms are outlined in the EULA agreement just before you click "Accept." It is part of the synchronization feature between the website and your cellphone, but you can remove the information from Facebook at any time.

Synchronization
When you allow Facebook to synchronize your contacts, all of your friends' phone numbers are uploaded to the site. Additionally, their email addresses are downloaded from Facebook and saved to the address book on the phone. Synchronization works only while you are connected to the Internet, either through Wi-Fi or a data plan; the app attempts to consolidate entries by matching the names in your address book with the names of your Facebook friends. If duplicate entries occur, you can correct them by editing the entries one at a time.

Uses
The purpose of synchronization is to merge the two lists together. Since Facebook comes preinstalled on most smartphones, many owners also have Facebook accounts. This feature streamlines the information and gives you access to data you didn't know you had. For example, mobile numbers are added from your Facebook friends that are not already in your address book. These numbers are viewable on the website if your friend allows it, but not everyone knows where to find them.

Concerns

Everyone is concerned with privacy, and every so often Facebook is forced to make a public announcement regarding access to your contacts. The list, formerly called "Phonebook," has always been there; most people simply didn't know about it. It may seem that your friends' numbers are being made available to the public, but they are viewable only to you while you are logged into your account.

Removal

Type the term "Phonebook Contacts" into the help pages search box to locate the "Remove All Imported Contacts" page. Facebook reminds you that, "Only you can see your contacts on Facebook, but this info may be used to make friends suggestions for you and others..." The page also warns iPhone users that "Removed contacts will be re-imported automatically unless you turn off syncing by going to Facebook App > Friends > Sync." Click "Remove" to confirm the deletion. The contacts page will still show numbers and emails from friends that share this information. Only the data that was uploaded from the phone will be removed.
