Start Fresh on Facebook

Facebook can be a great way to stay connected with new and old friends, but it is easy to get out of control. If you get into the habit of sharing too much or participating in Facebook drama, it can bleed over into your life offline and affect your relationships. When you want to get the value out of Facebook without the emotional stress, kick old habits and make a fresh start.

Instructions
Step 1
Deactivate your original Facebook account. Go to your Account Settings panel, and select the "Security" option from the left navigation bar. On the Security Settings page that pops up, click on the "Deactivate my account" link at the bottom. Choose your reason for leaving, and click the "Confirm" button. To stop receiving emails from Facebook about your account, even when it is deactivated, check the box at the bottom.

Step 2
Send a request to Facebook to delete your account permanently. Because deactivating the account can be reversed, a complete deletion can guarantee that you won't be dragged back into your old profile. Go to the Help Topics section, choose the "How do I permanently delete my account?" page, and click the "submit your request here" link at the bottom of the page. Facebook will completely delete all information.

Step 3
Create a new profile with another email address. Visit the Facebook home page and follow the prompts until you have finished the setup process. Don't add any friends to start; ignore the prompt to import your address book. When Facebook emails you a confirmation link, click it to finish the process.

Step 4
Adjust your security settings to keep anyone from seeing your information but the people you choose to add; this will keep your photos and status updates safe from public scrutiny. Choose "Privacy Settings" from the Account menu. Go through the list of assets, like your personal information, status, photos, and commenting permissions, and choose custom settings. Set your information to "Friends" or "Only Me." You may not want your friends to be able to see the photos you are tagged in, for example, so that you can choose to share them or not to protect your privacy.

Step 5
Add friends judiciously and monitor your posts. Invite only the friends that did not participate in any Facebook trouble with your last account. Reject requests from people you don't know well. When you start posting again, be careful about what you share with the world. Don't share too much or make yourself too vulnerable; make sure your pictures and status updates are tasteful and unoffensive.
