Celebrate Valentine's Day With Long-Distance Lover

While it can be difficult to be away from your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, there are creative ways to still celebrate the holiday together. If you and your long-distance lover cannot be together this February, begin making plans early. Try to come up with a list of possible ideas about a month in advance, as some long-distance Valentine’s gifts will take time to prepare. Mark your calendar for mid-January with a reminder, if possible.

A Date in a Box
Send your lover a date in a box from wherever you are. Think about including special local chocolates, pastries and a DVD of a romantic movie set in your city. For example, if your lover lives in San Francisco and you are based in Seattle, pack a gift box with Seattle chocolates, cookies and a copy of “Sleepless in Seattle.” If you live in Boston, send Necco Conversation Hearts and a DVD of “Love Story.” Include a sweet note about the kind of date you would like to take your sweetheart on in your city.

Watch a Movie Together
Talk with your valentine in advance and choose a movie to watch together on Valentine’s Day. Make sure you can both easily watch the film at the same time, settle in with some popcorn, and prepare to start the film at the same time. Before pressing “play,” call your partner on the phone or on Skype. You can speak throughout the movie and it can feel like you are sitting together in the same room. Watch the movie “When Harry Met Sally” for inspiration. In that film, there is a memorable scene where the two title characters watch “Casablanca” at the same time while chatting on the phone.

Special Delivery
Even if you cannot bring your lover flowers in person, you can still arrange for a special delivery. If flowers feel too traditional, consider calling his local pizzeria and ordering a pie decorated with a pepperoni or mushroom heart. You could also order your significant other's favorite Chinese food to be delivered. After calling in the order, send along a sweet text message like, “I’m sending you fortune cookies because I’m so fortunate to have you for a Valentine.”

Good Morning Video
Make a short video for your sweetheart to wake up to on Valentine’s morning. Record a message telling your friend that you care about him and describe the special things about your relationship. You can talk about how important he is to you and you can talk about how your connection can triumph over the distance between you. Remind him that there is no one you would rather be with. These small affirmations are valuable gifts for a long-distance lover.
