If you live in an area that experiences harsh winters or you travel frequently to colder climates, you know that winter weather can cause many problems with your vehicle. One problem that drivers often face in the morning, before heading to work, is frozen car locks. Obviously, if the lock is frozen, you won't be able to unlock the doors and get into your car. Luckily, there are a few techniques to thaw out a frozen lock.
Hot Key Method
Heat up the metal portion of your key with a lighter or match. Insert the hot key into the lock and let it thaw the frozen components. It may take a few attempts to completely thaw out the lock.
Hair Dryer Method
Use a hair dryer with an extension cord and turn it on to the "Warm" or "Hot" setting. Blow the hot air directly onto the lock until it thaws. This may take awhile to work.
De-icer Method
Apply windshield de-icer to the lock and components. Spray de-icer directly into the lock cylinder and wait a few seconds. Then insert your key and attempt to turn it.
Body Heat Method
If you don't have access to de-icer or anything warm, you can try to use your body heat to thaw the lock. Place your bare hand over the lock for a few minutes; be careful, if your hand is wet or sweaty, as it may get stuck to the cold metal. Switch hands and do this until the lock is warm enough to turn. You can also cup your hands around the lock and breathe into them, warming up the lock with your breath. These techniques might take a long time to work; but if you're stuck somewhere with no other way to unfreeze the lock, they may be your only options.
