Pick up a Guy at Gym

A gym is a somewhat insular community, especially if you always work out in the same place. This can create a sense of easy familiarity with the people you frequently see, but it raises the stakes on a pickup. If things go wrong, you might feel awkward continuing to work out next to your crush. Take your time and get to know the guy in a friendly way before transitioning into a possible date.

Dress for success. Some men are automatically suspicious of girls who hang around the gym in very revealing
outfits, but wearing sloppy sweats can lower your self-confidence. Strive for a middle ground with comfortable, well-fitted attire that makes you feel great. Consider adding a hint of red, as a study in the December 2011 edition of the “Journal of Experimental Social Psychology” found that the color enhances physical attraction in men.

Smile at the guy you want to attract. According to Dr. Jeremy Dean’s PsyBlog, women who smile are 60 percent more likely to be approached than those who do not. However, be careful not to stand around with a cheesy grin, which can come across as inauthentic.

Say something friendly that is directly related to the gym. In “Ten Pickup Lines for the Gym,” eHarmony.com suggests asking for help with your workout or suggestions for classes. Volunteering to act as a spotter also works, but make sure you are familiar with the equipment you are spotting.

Talk about the gym, the weather and other small talk topics. Light, friendly conversation helps you and your crush get to know each other without pressure.

Transition the conversation into more personal matters. Casually ask whether your crush is seeing anyone, and mention your own single status. Let the conversation evolve naturally rather than rushing into a list of potentially awkward questions.

Remain true to yourself. While you might be tempted to act like the kind of woman you think your crush wants, phoniness is a turn-off and is tough to maintain. If the guy is right for you, he will like you exactly the way you are. Get to know him and allow him to get to know you.

Suggest a specific activity, such as seeing a movie, and a specific time. How to present the offer depends on your style and the information you have gathered about your crush’s personality. A coy, “I happen to have an extra ticket” works well for many women, while others are more successful with a line such as, “Since we’re talking instead of working out anyway, do you want to continue this over coffee?”
