A blog is a type of website that lists the posts in order of the date when they were written, with the most recent first. The posts are usually timely articles with content that is relevant at the time it is posted but may not remain relevant in the future. Examples could be special sales, news about events and other things that are going on within a company. Usually, readers can make comments and can subscribe to the content using an RSS feed. There are lots of choices you need to make when you're getting ready to add a blog to your website.
Domain name
Consider the purpose of your blog, which might be to make money, to interact with your readers or to display your writing or photography. The purpose will help guide you as you make other choices, such as what style of blog you want and what you are willing to pay, if anything, to set it up.
Explore the choices you have for your blogging platform (software). Look in your Web host's control panel to see what options your host has for blogging. Most hosts offer at least one, and some offer several, including possibly WordPress or a blogging software that's branded by your web host. You can install a blogging software such as WordPress if your host doesn't specifically offer it.
Install the blog software, if necessary. If your Web host offers "1-click WordPress installation" this is the easiest method. If not, you can download the software from the WordPress website (see Resources) and install it on your Web host. Refer to the help section on your web host or the WordPress help section for more information. Another option is to set up a blog at Blogger. If you do this, you need to go into the Settings options, and select the option for using your own domain name.
Choose a design for your blog, sometimes called a theme or template. Some designs will be displayed from within the control panel of the blog software, sometimes called the dashboard or back end. For others, you may have to purchase and install them separately. Look for a template that suits your purpose for blogging; for example, some templates are made specifically for displaying images or photos (gallery style), some show an introductory snippet of many recent posts or stories and let the reader click to read more (magazine style), some have lots of modules or widgets in the sidebar to help you earn money from your blog, and some are simple and designed to showcase the blog's content (minimalist). Install and activate your chosen template or theme. If you choose a free theme, you can try several before making a final choice. Pick colors that are similar to those used on your main website, and use a custom header that has the same logo, so visitors know it's part of the same overall site. Make sure your blog has a link back to your website home page, and that the main pages of your website have a link to your blog.
