How to Create an Effective Newsletter

Everybody sign ups for a lot of digital newsletters. Mostly because everybody anticipates one of these three benefits from being on that person or company's list including blogging:

1. Receive details on sales and discounts

2. Be entertained or inspired

3. Learn something of value

Most people are like me and will gladly provide their name and email address for at least one of the above benefits.

I've written a lot about the reasons WHY an entrepreneur or business should be sending out regular newsletters and today's article focuses on the 3rd reason provided above - creating information-based newsletters that your subscribers will love.

What To Keep In Mind for Your Newsletter

First, here's a few tips on what you want to be thinking about as you compose your next email send out. You'll want to:

- Offer something of value; be informative.

- Lose the sales-pitch, aim to educate instead. Aim for 90% educational content and 10% promotional. (The exception to this rule is if you are a B2C company that sells products where people are signing up to receive special discounts to subscribers.)

- Be personable; let people get to know, like and trust you.

- Be concise.

- Be consistent.

- Use a compelling subject and opening line.

- Adhere to Anti-Spam and CASL laws - ensure it's easy for people to unsubscribe while using a trusted newsletter service provider.

- Use graphics, headings and white space to make the newsletter visually appealing and easy to read.

So before you dive into writing, it's important to plan your newsletter to get optimal results.

Here is a summary of the components that should make up your value-driven newsletter:

7 Important Format Components to Include In Your Information-Based Newsletter

1. Begin With a Personal Note

In order to build a "know like and trust" factor with your readers, you want to give them some insight to who you are personally. I'm not saying you have to share what you ate for breakfast that morning (unless nutrition is your business!) but do share something casual or interesting that your readers would love to know more about.

If you feel uncomfortable with sharing personal information, then share what seminars you've taken, what books you've read, what hobby you're into - anything so people make a connection that you are a human being just like them!

Include a photo pertaining to what you're talking about if you can as this enhances the relationship building you want to achieve.

2. Have a Client Showcase/Raving Fans Section

This can be in the form of showcasing new clients or a way to post client testimonials who are your raving fans.

Make this section more than just a couple of sentences - you want this to be more a short case study that details the benefits of what you did for a client and why they are so happy with your product/service.

Have a photo of the client and link to their website so it becomes a win-win scenario and they get good exposure for writing you such a rave review.

3. Include a Feature Article

When it comes to providing something of value to your readers, this should the main feature of your newsletter.

There are a couple of ways to do this and I suggest you give them both a try and monitor your results:

1. Place the full article in the body of the newsletter OR

2. Have just the first couple of paragraphs of the article in the newsletter and then link to the full article that is also posted in your blog. This serves a couple of purposes:

1. Sends people back to your website and

2. The article posted in the blog is great for search engines and can also be posted to your social media sites at the same time.

Be sure to add a note at the bottom of your article inviting readers to repurpose it in their own newsletters or website and/or share it to their social media followers.

Give them a short paragraph that must accompany the repurposed article that provides a call to action for the reader to go to your site and get your free giveaway or sign up for your newsletter.

4. Add a Schedule of Where You Will Be

If you do presentations, talks, webinars, podcasts, demonstrations or anything where the public could come and see or hear you, add this section that details the dates of these events and what you'll be doing.

If you are wanting to showcase yourself as an expert in your industry, include other events such as attending seminars, high-end coaching sessions or travel destinations.

5. Have a Promotional Section

Just because we don't want the newsletter to be salesy doesn't mean we shouldn't let our subscribers know what we have to offer.

In fact, I highly recommend adding such a section to your newsletter so you don't become known as someone who ONLY provides valuable content and then when you DO want to promote something, they will leave in disgust! (Yes, I've learned this lesson myself.)

So create a section that is either image based or text and image that provides enough information to compel people to click and read more about your offer.

6. Provide Recommendations

This section can be used for you to recommend something you would find of value to your readers. This can be a book, a recipe, a service or product... whatever you wish!

If possible, you can use this opportunity to become an affiliate of the item you are promoting and gain commissions on any sales that might come of it.

7. End With Your Bio/Profile

Conclude your newsletter with a section at the bottom reminding your readers of who you are. Craft a concise "20 second elevator pitch" that speaks to the problems people have that you can solve for them.

Finish with a call to action by contacting you for a free 'get acquainted' session or whatever your free offer is.

Many clients shy away from writing a newsletter because they don't know what to write about. Here's a suggestion: think about a question a client asked you this week or think about an interesting idea you came across you want to share with your readers.

Start writing down what you want to say - don't worry about the grammar, just get your thoughts onto paper. Once that hard part is done, then flush out the rest of your newsletter by following the formula above.

Writing a consistent newsletter does take commitment and I know it took me a few years before I got serious with my commitment of delivering valuable content to my readers every Tuesday.

Best Way to Make a Teen Blog

In addition to such microblogging platforms as Twitter, there are currently millions of regular blogs available for reading on the Internet. Some people create blogs in order to generate revenue; others create blogs so that they have a place to voice their opinions. Whatever the case may be, setting up a blog has grown easier than it was a decade ago, with such platforms as Wordpress practically setting it up for you. If you want to set up a teen blog, all you need is Internet access and a bit of know-how.
  1. Step 1

Decide whether you would like to use a free platform such as Wordpress' free option or Blogger (Google's free blog platform), or whether you'd like to purchase a domain. Keep in mind that owning a domain gives you, as the webmaster, a lot more control over such features as design and URLs.
  2. Step 2

Choose a name for your blog. Some will say that the name makes a big difference when it comes to search engine optimization, the process of getting your website to rank in the search engines (such as Google) in order to expand your blog's web presence. Ultimately, if your blog offers interesting-enough content and you interact enough with other bloggers and the general webasphere, you'll be okay.
  3. Step 3

Set up your blog. If you decide on a free blog, go to either blogger.com or wordpress.org. Blogger will require you to have a Gmail account or to set one up. It will be connected with your blog, and signing into your Gmail account means that you will be automatically signed into your Blogger account.
If you decide to set up a paid blog, Wordpress is one of the most user-friendly blogging platforms available. Instead of Wordpress.org, go to Wordpress.com to set up your blog. Enter you blog's title (the name that you chose in Step 2), and fill out the remaining fields required.
Bear in mind that there is a charge for using Wordpress.com, so have a credit card handy.
  4. Step 4

Set up hosting. Wordpress has a list of fecommended hosting providers. Wordpress does have some requirements for hosting, so it's advisable to choose one of them.
  5. Step 5

Brainstorm on your topic using a good old-fashioned pen and paper. Write down any and every idea that comes into your head. Decide which one of them you would like to write about first and prioritize the rest.
  6. Step 6

Change your blog's design. Wordpress offers a variety of themes for free so you don't have to design your own theme or pay someone to design a theme. The theme will incorporate the background colors, images, font and text colors that you want. This is a teen blog, so keep it fun and lively.
  7. Step 7

Write your first post. Use your own voice. Your blog isn't formal; it is meant to express your opinions and your ideas. If you aren't writing what you know and feel, it will translate into the tone and content of your blog. When you're satisfied with the post, you can either publish it or save it.

Create Post Categories on Tumblr

The microblogging platform Tumblr provides a variety of tools for creating, cataloging and sharing your blog posts, including a method for categorizing your posts. Referred to as tags, categories created for your blog posts allow other users on Tumblr to see your posts using search queries submitted to the site. Tumblr does not provide a way to create tags without assigning them to blog posts, so in order to create a category, you will first need to figure out which of your posts you want to associate with the category.
  1. Step 1

Go online to Tumblr.com, type the email address and password associated with your Tumblr account in the corresponding text fields and press “Enter.”
  2. Step 2

Click the name of the blog you want to create categories for in the top menu. The dashboard and feed associated with your blog appears.
  3. Step 3

Click “Launch Mass Post Editor” in the right side bar.
  4. Step 4

Click the blog posts you want to create categories for in the menu and click “Add Tags.”
  5. Step 5

Type the category you want to create for the blog posts in the text field and click “Add Tags.” Separate category names with commas to create more than one category for your Tumblr blog.

Make Albums on Tumblr Blog

You don’t need to use third-party tools to make photo albums for your Tumblr blog because Tumblr gives you options for displaying more than one photo within a standard photo post.
    1. Add Photos to the Post

    2. You can add up to 10 photos from a computer, storage device or website to any post as long as the total size of the combined photos doesn’t exceed 10MB and the images are in RGB color and JPG/JPEG or PNG file formats. Click the “Photo” camera icon, select “Choose Up to 10 Photos” or “URL” and then proceed as instructed on-screen. To add additional photos, click the “Upload Another Photo” option that appears in the template under the first picture.
    1. Edit and Create the Album

    2. Tumblr allows you to align up to three photos side-by-side in stacked horizontal rows. To move any photo to a different position, click and drag it until blue vertical and horizontal guidelines display that indicate available positions, and then drop it in place. Tumblr also allows you to add captions to individual photos. Hover your cursor over the top right corner of a picture, click the Speech Bubble icon, type a caption and click “Set Caption.” To finish your album post, add a title and/or description in the post's main Caption box, add searchable keywords to the field marked with a tag icon and then click “Post.”

Ways for Teens to Make Money

Teens easily make money at home using a combination of old-fashioned methods and new technologies. Computers and the Internet have opened a vast array of possibilities for teenagers to work and make money using spare time at home. Blogging, selling items online and advertising help teens earn a small income without leaving the house. Supplementing computer-based modern methods with common household chores increases the options for teens to make money at home.
    1. Blog

    2. Teenagers make money blogging when visitors click on advertisements.

Launching a blog is a popular moneymaker. Teenagers create more than half of all blogs, according to a Perseus Development Corporation survey. It is simply a matter of choosing a favorite topic, setting up a free website and signing up for advertising programs. Links appear throughout the blog, so teens receive payment every time someone clicks on an advertisement. Regularly updating the blog will bring a stream of traffic and significant revenue.
    1. Chores

    2. Good,old-fashioned household chores offer plenty of ways for teens to make money at home.

Doing chores is still an age-old way for teens to make money at home while learning responsibility. However, it is not good to overburden them with too many chores, especially when they already work another home-based job. That's because the teenage mind lacks the physical capability to effectively multitask and organize, according to research published in Child Development.
    1. Online Auctions

    2. Old clothing provides accessible items for teens to sell in an online auction.

Participating in on-line auctions is one of nine ways for teens to make money, according to Entrepreneur.com. They require minimal investment, just fees for setting up the auction and selling the item. Teens start out listing used clothing, old toys and other collectibles. As their business progresses, donations from friends and family fuel the momentum.
Eventually some will progress to sales via dropship companies. These firms offer low-cost items to sell without the need to maintain an inventory. It's just a matter of evaluating and researching products and determining the list price, which ends up higher than the actual cost. After buyers purchase items, the teens buy them from the dropshipper, ship them to the buyer and keep the difference. Most dropship companies require a membership fee to purchase the discounted items.
    1. Service

    2. Teens earn money at home by advertising an at-home repair service, which requires no travel.

Advertising an at-home service permits teens to create businesses and make money independently. Printed advertisements and on-line classifieds inform residents about the service offered, such as tutoring or drop-off repair services. Teens with a creative ability to make crafts or other useful items can list and sell them via the Internet or newspaper advertisement.
    1. Writing

    2. Teens turn a love of writing into cash by writing for websites in the comfort of home.

Numerous websites offer ways for teens to make money at home writing. Thus, not only will they earn an income, but also develop writing ability for future endeavors. Teens also feel a sense of pride becoming a published writer. Many magazines accept submissions from teenagers, as well. A teen thinking about starting a career in writing gains experience while earning income at home.

Start Blog for Free

From news sites to businesses, many influential and profitable blogs have become part of modern culture. If you're looking to join the blogosphere to either share some commentary on events in your life or turn a profit from sharing useful information, setting up your own blog is a simple process.
  1. Step 1

Browse to one of the sites listed in Resources.
Blogger is integrated with Google Adsense, which can make you a little cash on the side if your blog becomes popular. Google also allows you to claim a domain name for your blog. Instead of myblog.blogger.com, it could be myblogsite.com. On the downside, Blogger doesn't offer much in the way of simple customization. Beyond the basic layout changes through their admin interface, you'll need to dive into the HTML and CSS to change things.
WordPress, on the other hand, is free to install on any website you already own, which means complete customization. They host blogs on their site, but these have fewer options for end users. Integrating ads into a WordPress blog isn't as quick as with Blogger, but you can use any ads you like, instead of being restricted to Google Adsense.
Tumblr is a little different from the other two – it's minimalistic and there are fewer personalization features, but the simple interface and follow system (similar to Facebook's like and repost system) has appeal for some users, especially more casual bloggers.
  2. Step 2

Sign up with the site by choosing a name for your blog, entering your information, username, password and email.
Try to be descriptive when choosing the name for your blog – the name will help readers find your blog in search engines.
  3. Step 3

Choose a template or theme for your blog. Themes and templates can always be changed later, if you're in a hurry.
If you're having difficulty picking a theme, consider your readers and the subject of your blog. The most obvious difference between blogs is the theme – a technology blog rarely looks like a home gardening blog, for example, in part because of the theme. If you understand what your readers will find most appealing, choosing a theme along that line will add some extra flair to your blog.
  4. Step 4

Make your first posting or customize your blog.

Start Your Blog With Blogger

A blog is short for "weblog." Writing a blog, or "blogging," has become a popular way to express opinions, make new friends, stay in contact with friends and family, post photos and videos, or to make money. Blogger, owned by Google, is one of the most popular weblog services on the Internet. It's very easy to create and start a new blog; plus, it's free! Using Blogger, you can create a blog, and customize the look of your blog to reflect your style.
  1. Go to Blogger.com and click "Create a Blog." Enter the required information. You must have an active email address to register for a Blogger account.
  2. Name your blog. Realize that your blog will have the suffix ".blogspot.com" appended to it. When you have entered your blog address, click the "Check Availability" link to see if your url has been previously claimed. Click the "Continue" button when you are ready.
  3. Choose a blog template. Click the links below the photo thumbnails to preview the templates. Click "Continue" when you are ready.
  4. Click "Start Blogging" on the next page. You will be directed to the "New Post" page of your new blog, where you may now write your first post.

Apply Theme to Wordpress Blog

Nothing says blogging better than WordPress, the leading source for blogs! What makes WordPress stand out from other free blogs, such as blogger, is because of the Wordpress themes, which is essentially what makes a blog unique. So, if you recently started a blog and looking to make a unique appearance with it, look into applying your own WordPress theme with ease! While wordpress ajax and wordpress music is a hot topic with this amazing blogging website, applying wordpress themes is an essential piece of knowledge in order to make the most success with such wordpress blogs.
  1. Get the necessary files from whatever theme you have downlaoded and archived.
  2. Access your host web server using the FTP program.
  3. Create a directory of your WordPress theme.
  4. Upload the WordPress theme files to the new directory via the FTP program and web host.
  5. Log in to the WordPress Administration Panels.
  6. Select the Presentation subpanel and click on the Mandigo screenshot.

Remove Tags on Tumblr Themes

One of the most distinct features of Tumblr is the ability to make modifications to themes quickly and easily. Features such as descriptions, dates, tags and avatar photos can be added or removed by directly editing the theme's HTML code. Tags are a popular feature of blogs since they allow easy access to other posts on similar topics. Tags on Tumblr have the added functionality of making your post publicly searchable by Tumblr users monitoring that tag. Those who want more privacy can opt out of using tags entirely.
  1. Log in to your Tumblr account and click on the blog you wish to edit. Select it in the drop-down menu on the right side of your dashboard.
  2. Click "Customize" to view the theme and appearance settings for your blog. On this screen you can edit the HTML for your Tumblr theme, change your blog description and edit import settings for third-party websites.
  3. Click the "Theme" link in the header, then select "Enable custom HTML" -- if this option is not already selected. The raw HTML for your Tumblr theme displays, allowing you to edit it.
  4. Save a backup of your Tumblr theme. Press "Ctrl+A" to highlight all the HTML code, then "Ctrl+C" to copy it. You can then paste the HTML code into a text editor such as Notepad. Press "Ctrl+V" in a blank Notepad file, then press "Ctrl+S" to save it. Type a name and select a location for your file in the "Save As" window, then click the "Save" button.
  5. Go back to the Tumblr theme customization page in your browser, then search through all the text by pressing "Ctrl+F" (the "Find" function) in the Tumblr HTML. In the window that appears, search for any instance of "{block:Tags}" -- without the quotes. Delete any instances the "Find" function uncovers, then repeat the process with any instance of "{tag}" -- again without quotes.

Sign in on Tumblr

Tumblr is a social media platform which lets you maintain a basic online journal called a tumbleog -- somewhere between a full-length journal and a migroblog. A tumbleog is not as fully-featured as traditional blogging sites but it offers you more scope than many microblogging services, such as Twitter with its text-only restriction and 140 character limits. A tumbleog lets you get the hang of online journalling via a no-frills platform that's easy to master. Tumblr is also a good choice for mobile blogging since the lightweight site works well on mobile devices.
  1. Launch your browser and navigate to tumblr.com.
  2. Left-click on the link that says "Sign Up."
  3. Enter a valid email address and a strong password in the appropriate fields. Enter a memorable name for the URL; this could be your own name, name of your company, or something connected with your work or hobbies
  4. Open your email and look for the validation message from Tumblr. Open the message when it arrives and follow the instructions to validate your Tumblr account.
  5. Go to the Tumblr login page. Sign in using your email address and password. You are now ready to begin blogging with Tumblr.

Increase Website Traffic with Facebook

Increase website traffic for free with a Facebook Fan Page. Use Facebook as an online marketing business tool for website or local businesses:
  1. Point your browser to www.FaceBook.com Create a personal profile using your name. Igf you already have a facebook page, login to your existing facebook account.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to view the links at the bottom of the page. Click on the link "Advertising"
  3. Free website traffic
On this advertising page, you will see Facebook's step by step approach as well as a button to "Create an Ad" - skip all of this! While creating an ad may increase website traffic, wouldn't you rather have free traffic?
  4. At the top of the page, click on "Pages", then "Create a Page". Select a category for your business. Choose carefully. This business category is what will be picked up in Google search engines.
  5. Enter the name of the business and sign the page to authorize that you are the owner, then click "Create Page". By creating a business page, you will increase website marketing and offer an outlet for online advertising.
  6. Email Marketing
Use this page to gather Fans for your business. Once you have a Fan base, you can use internet marketing advertising including promotional items, events, coupons, free giveaways, etc for Facebook Fans only.

Disconnect Tumblr From Facebook

Facebook users who also use the Tumblr blogging website can link their Tumblr accounts to their Facebook profiles so that every post they make from Tumblr appears in their Facebook News Feed. To prevent Tumblr posts from appearing in the News Feed, disconnect the Tumblr account from the Facebook account.
  1. Open the computer's Web browser and navigate to the Facebook login page. Type your Facebook account email address and password in the spaces provided and click the "Login" button.
  2. Click the "Account" button in the upper-right corner of the Facebook homepage and select the "Privacy Settings" option from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click the "Edit your settings" link beneath the "Apps and Websites" heading to view the apps, games and websites linked to your Facebook account.
  4. Click the "Edit Settings" button to the right of the "Apps you use" heading.
  5. Click the "X" icon to the right of the "Tumblr" application heading, then "Remove" to disconnect Tumblr from the Facebook account.

Post Your Blog to Twitter

First launched in 2006, Twitter is a popular social media service that allows users to create short messages, limited to 140 characters, called "tweets." Originally envisioned as a cell phone messaging social network, Twitter can be accessed via computers as well as SMS and smart phone applications. Twitter users use tweets for various purposes including conversation, networking, business announcements and promotion. Bloggers often use Twitter as a method of promoting their blog and individual blog posts to their Twitter user base.
  1. Step 1

Create your blog entry using the blogging service of your choice. Popular blogging services include Blogger and Wordpress. Once you have created your entry, publish it to your blog. Your blogging service will give you the URL of the blog entry you just created.
  2. Step 2

Shorten the URL. Popular URL shortening services include bit.ly and Tiny URL (see Resources).
  3. Step 3

Post your blog entry to Twitter. Twitter allows users to access their service via the Twitter website or via third-party applications called "clients."
To post your blog via the Twitter website, go to the "What's happening now?" box on the home page and enter the shortened URL. Click "Tweet" to publish the tweet.
To post your blog via a Twitter client, log in to your Twitter client according to your client's instructions. Create a new Tweet with the shortened URL and then publish.

How to Make Your Blog

When it comes to creating your very first blog, choosing from the sea of blogging platforms can be exhausting and confusing. Of all the programs designed for blog management, two stand out: Google's Blogger and WordPress. You can try either for free, though WordPress requires that you choose between WordPress.com, which is more like Blogger, and WordPress.org, which you upload to your own Web space. Remember: you're not married to your blogging platform. If you try one and dislike it, there are ways of transferring your posts to a different blogging service.
    1. Blogger

    2. Step 1

Log in to Blogger (blogger.com) with your Google account. This also links your Blogger blog to your Google+ profile. You can create multiple blogs under one Google account via Blogger.
    3. Step 2

On the Blogger dashboard, click the "New Blog" button. Blogger will ask for a name of your blog, an address -- e.g., yourblog.blogspot.com -- and ask you to select a template for your blog.
    4. Step 3

Click "Create Blog." From there, you can get started with more posts, create pages for your blog, change your settings, and even add multiple authors.
    1. WordPress.com

    2. Step 1

Go to WordPress.com and click the "Get started here" button. You can also click "Sign Up" in the title bar, in addition to the "Log in" button if you already have a WordPress account.
    3. Step 2

Choose a blog name for your URL. WordPress.com domains -- e.g., blogname.wordpress.com -- are free, but you can also purchase a domain name through WordPress.com for a yearly fee.
    4. Step 3

Create a username and password for your WordPress.com account. In addition to logging in to manage your blog, you can also use this WordPress account to comment on other blogs.
    5. Step 4

Click the "Create Blog" button to get started. You can also choose a yearly paid account, but for a first-time blogger, try going free for a bit first. If you decide you don't like WordPress.com, you won't be tied down by a paid account; if you do, you can upgrade later.
    6. Step 5

Choose a pre-made theme for your blog. You can always change the theme later; some themes are free, but premium themes will be marked with a price underneath them.
    7. Step 6

Click the "My Blogs" tab on the dashboard. This shows a list of your blogs. Click "Dashboard" beneath your new blog to manage your blog settings. You can manage posts and comments, change your themes, upload files, create polls, and change your blog settings.
    1. WordPress.org

    2. Step 1

Download the core WordPress.org files. You will need to unpack these files, which come in a ZIP file, and upload them all to your own web space. While this is just slightly more complicated, it also comes with more freedom; you can change whatever you like about your WordPress.org installation, and install custom plug-ins that are not available to WordPress.com users.
    3. Step 2

Check that your Web host meets the minimum requirements to run WordPress.org: it needs to run PHP version 5.2.4 or higher, and offer access to MySQL 5.0 or higher. Check your host's documentation to see if yours does; WordPress.org states that BlueHost, DreamHost, and Laughing Squid all meet the service's requirements.
    4. Step 3

Using the MySQL module in your Web host's control panel, create a new database for your WordPress installation. Write down the database name, your username, your password, and your database host.
    5. Step 4

Go to the directory where you unzipped the WordPress files and find "wp-config-sample.php" in the root directory. Change the file to "wp-config.php" and open it with your preferred plain text editor. At the top you'll see this section:
      // MySQL settings - You can get this info from your web host // /* The name of the database for WordPress / define('DB_NAME', 'database_name_here');
      /* MySQL database username / define('DB_USER', 'username_here');
      /* MySQL database password / define('DB_PASSWORD', 'password_here');
      /* MySQL hostname / define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

Publish Blogger Blog to a Website

Want to use your own website and your own web space to display a Blogger blog? Just tell Blogger where to publish by FTP and you're blogging.
  1. Add a new directory to your existing website. This will be the place where Blogger sends your blog posts.
  2. Sign in to Blogger.
  3. Go to the Settings > Publishing page for your blog.
  4. Select the option to publish to a Custom Domain.
  5. Fill in the form fields asking for FTP server, Blog URL and FTP path with the information for your website.
The blog URL will use the new directory name you have ready, such as www.mysite.com/blogname/. The FTP path will be exactly like the one you use for your site, except the new directory name will be included. It might look something like this: public_html/blogname/.
  6. Decide what filename you want for the main page of the blog. A good choice is index.html.
  7. Decide on the feed filename. If you're using Blogger's feed, this will probably be atom.xml.
  8. Finally, give Blogger the username and FTP password for your web site.
  9. Click Save Settings. Publish your blog to the new location on your own web site.
