Blogging is rapidly becoming the rage in website design. Not only does a blog provide you with the opportunity to communicate with your audience or your customers quickly and easily, it opens a new channel for audience feedback. Even if you don't want your entire business or organization website to be a blog, you can add a single blog page to your regular website with a free blogging module such as WordPress.
Determine if your current website hosting plan includes access to an SQL database account. WordPress and other blogging software platforms require SQL database capabilities. Most web hosting companies include access to a SQL database as part of their regular hosting package.
Set up a SQL database on your web server account. Note the database name (example: "db283747374") user name ("dbo283747374"), database hosting location ("2838.perfora.net") and the unique SQL database password ("jhd#409e**wrwjh") assigned to you when you establish the SQL database.
Create a file folder within your website, on your hosting server, for the blog program. Use your usual FTP program to create this new directory. Call it "blog." The URL for this blog directory should be something like http://yourwebsite.com/blog.
Download the WordPress program from wordpress.org to your computer. Unzip the WordPress file and transfer the entire contents of this file to your blog directory using your FTP program.
Open the "wp-config-sample.php" file within the WordPress files you downloaded on your computer. Use Notepad or Wordpad to open this file. Fill in the blanks found inside this file with your SQL database information. Save this file with a new name: "wp-config.php" and upload it to your server in the WordPress directory folder.
Navigate to the blog page on your website. Type this URL into your browser: "http:yourwebsite.com/blog/wp-install.php." This will open your WordPress installation control panel.
Enter the name of your blog into the configuration box. Make sure the URL is set to "point" to your blog page on your website, not to your website homepage. Enter a working email address that you can access immediately. Click "Install."
Check your email. Retrieve your login information for your WordPress blog site. Your starting login name will always be "admin" and you must use the unique password WordPress assigns to you to sign in the first time. You can change this password later.
Navigate to your web blog page. Type in the URL again: http://yourwebsite.com/blog. The blog page should appear. Look for a link on this page for "Login." Log in with the user name "admin" and your assigned password. This will open your Dashboard control panel for your blog. You can set up how your blog functions and its appearance using this Dashboard.
Upgrade or change the look of your blog by searching the Internet for "Free WordPress Templates." Download a template and follow the instructions to upload it to your blog site. You can then switch to this new template using Dashboard controls.
Create a link on your regular website to this new blog page once it is set up.
Use the Dashboard "Widget" feature on your blog page to create a link on your blog page back to your regular website.
