Creating a home page with WordPress involves a few simple setting adjustments. By changing your home page to a static page, you will shift the functionality of your WordPress site from a dynamic blogging platform to a static, informational website. This allows the blogging platform to function as a content management system (CMS). A CMS allows you to easily make aesthetic adjustments to your site by altering themes and functionality while leaving the actual content intact.
Step 1
Log in to your WordPress dashboard by using the proper user name and password. These are assigned to you by email when the account is created, and under the Users tab, you can change or create different administration users after your account is live. The dashboard gives you access to the "back end" of the site and allows you to adjust the site and add content.Step 2
Go to the Pages section on the left side of the dashboard, and select the Add New Page link. Label this page "Home," and add any copy, logos, graphics or images. The actual layout of the content will depend on the theme you choose. You can choose from thousands of themes, ranging from simple, free templates to customized, highly developed themes available for sale from individual developers.Step 3
Save your changes to the page, and return to the Settings section of the dashboard.Step 4
Select the Reading option underneath Settings, and select the Static Page bubble next to Front Page Displays.Step 5
Go to the Front Page drop-down menu located directly beneath the Static Page option, and select the Home page you just created. (See Reference 2.) If you plan on having a blogging page within your site, you can also designate an additional page where blog entries can be placed. Simply activate the Posts Page drop-down menu, and choose your blog page from the menu.Step 6
Select the link at the top of your dashboard labeled with the name of your site, which will direct you to the live version of your website. Check to see that the homepage is now static, meaning that it does not contain any blogging entries and loads the way you envisioned.
