Download Your Whole Tumblr Site

Even though the popular microblogging site Tumblr doesn't have a built-in export option, you can still liberate your content from Tumblr's servers and take it with you. Backing up your Tumblr allows you to repost items if they become deleted and move the content to other blogging sites if you want to. A raw HTML file may not be compatible with other blogging platforms, but it gives you the unadulterated version of your Tumblr blog. If you want to migrate to another blogging platform, however, you will want to use a specialized tool that formats things nicely for exporting.

• Backup Jammy

  1. Step 1

     Browse to the Backup Jammy website (link in Resources).

  2. Step 2

     Type in the username for your Tumblr account. This is everything on your Tumblr URL prior to ".tumblr.com" in the address bar. Note, if you have a custom domain name, type that in and change the drop-down box to reflect the correct suffix.

  3. Step 3

     Click "Go!" and wait for the app to pull up all your Tumblr posts. When it's done, right-click on the page and choose "Save as Web Page."

• Tumblr Backup

  1. Step 1

     Browse to the Tumblr Staff site (link in Resources) and download the Tumblr Backup app. This app is only available for OS X version 10.5 or higher.

  2. Step 2

     Open the app on your Mac. Enter the name of the blog you want to backup. This is the text that appears before the ".tumblr.com" in the URL. Enter the full URL for custom domains.

  4. Step 3

     Click "Go" to begin the backup. You can re-run the backup periodically and have it save to the same location if you want. You can also change the save location.

• Tumblr2WordPress

  1. Step 1

     Browse to the Tumblr2WordPress site (link in Resources). Use this tool if you want to re-host your Tumblr blogs on a WordPress blog. You can also use other conversion tools to transfer the WordPress formatting into other blogging formats.

  2. Step 2

     Enter your Tumblr account username. If you have a custom domain, enter the username you use to log in to Tumblr.

  3. Step 3

     Choose the export type -- for example HTML. Select the Permalink Slug type -- this indicates the way the HTML will link to each post, whether with the title, number or a combination of the two.

  4. Step 4

     Select the type of blog you're exporting to -- either a WordPress.com blog or a self-hosted blog. Choose the status of the posts you want to export, comments and pings.

  5. Step 5

     Click "Export" and then download the XML file created. You can import the file into your WordPress blog or convert it to another blogging format.
