Certified parent instructors teach parents how to work with children of various ages and children that have issues such as temper tantrums or teenage behaviors. You do not necessarily need a certificate to teach a class, but becoming a certified parent instructor shows the parents that you have the education to teach them the skills they need. Parents feel more comfortable learning from someone who has proof that they have had training, and they are more likely to pay for a parenting course if you have been certified.
Step 1
Focus on the type of parenting classes that you would like to teach. Some parenting instructors teach only birthing and newborn care classes, while others teach parents about effective and positive discipline techniques or how to help children through the divorce process. Once you decide what to teach, you will know what type of certificate you need.Step 2
Register for a parenting class and participate in it. This lets you see if teaching a course is right for you, and it gives you the concept of how a normal parenting class goes. You definitely want to do this if you have never taken a parenting class before.Step 3
Talk to the teacher when the class is over and find out where they got their parenting certificate. Most teachers are more than happy to share the story of how they became a certified parenting instructor. If they teach the style of classes that you are interested in, sign up for instructor classes at the same place that your teacher took theirs.Step 4
Sign up for a parenting instructor course online. The website will provide or sell you valuable teaching tools. Two examples of these courses can be found at Parenting from the Heart and the Co-Parenting Instructor Certification Program from the Conscious Co-Parenting Institute. The rate for the Conscious Co-Parenting class is $997, or$ 947 if you enroll 2 people. The rate for the Parenting from the Heart course is $2,300.Step 5
Study hard and complete the parenting instructor course. After finish the courses, you become a certified instructor. You may have to become re-certified to teach parenting classes every one or two years. This depends on the instructor's course you choose.
