The Facebook development team is continually experimenting with new features for both its notifications and messaging system. The company has recently made moves to both reduce the number of email notifications users get and to combine the instant messaging and email-style message services into one coherent whole. Because of these changes, you may not be getting the email notifications to which you're accustomed.
Notification Changes
In a wall post on the official Facebook page in September 2011, the company informed users that it was testing a new feature that replaced individual notification emails with summary ones. According to the post, the option would appear for users "who are very active" on the social networking site, although exact details of who is included in the testing and how long it would last were not given.
Messenger Changes
As of February 2011, Facebook rolled out an improved Messenger service that combined the instant messaging Chat component with direct inbox messages. Messages across Facebook that previously generated email notifications would instead launch a chat box and a notification on the Facebook site itself or the associated mobile app. In addition, a new "Other" folder was created to filter out less important messages, which do not generate a notification or email alert and need to be checked manually.
Changing Notification Settings
To change the notification settings for your account, visit facebook.com/settings in a Web browser. If the email summary option in the "Notifications" tab is available at the top of the page, untick it and scroll down to the Facebook heading below. Here you'll find the option to receive individual email alerts every time you are sent a Facebook message. Click "Save Changes" to confirm your choice. The same screen enables you to customize alerts for other activity as well.
Other Settings
Make sure you are using the correct email address with Facebook by visiting your "Account Settings" page from the drop-down menu. Notifications are posted to the address listed by the Email heading. If you have adjusted the notification settings as described above and still aren't receiving alerts, check your junk or spam email folder to see if they have been filtered out incorrectly. To prevent this from happening add "@facebookmail.com" domains to your safe-sender list in your default email client. If the problem persists, contact Facebook directly through the contact form available from the notifications page in the Help Center.
