Problems with Facebook chat connectivity are usually related to your Internet connection or your chat settings. The ways to fix your Facebook chat connection issues vary slightly, depending on whether you're using a mobile app or the Facebook website.
Fix Facebook Chat Connection Problems on Mobile Devices
Step 1
Check your Internet connection settings to make sure you're connected to the Internet. If you're attempting to connect to Facebook chat via a cellular data network connection, check the notifications bar along the top of your screen to make sure you have a signal. If you're trying to connect to chat using Wi-Fi, make sure Wi-Fi is enabled.
If Wi-Fi is not enabled, open your phone's Settings app, select its Wi-Fi settings menu and join a network.
Tip
The appearance of your Notifications panel and ways of turning on Wi-Fi will vary depending on the make, model and operating system of your smartphone or tablet. Check your device's manual for more information about connecting to the Internet.
Step 2
Make sure Facebook chat is turned on in the mobile application you're using. If you're using the Facebook app, tap the three-line Menu icon and select Chat.
Touch the Settings icon and verify that chat is turned on. If it's not, touch the On radio button. You know chat is turned on when a check mark appears.
Alternately, if you're using the Facebook Messenger app rather than the regular Facebook app, tap the Settings icon and make sure a check mark appears next to the Facebook chat field. Tap the Facebook Chat check box to place a check mark there and establish chat connectivity, if necessary.
Step 3
Restart the Facebook app or Facebook Messenger to re-establish a connection with Facebook's chat servers.
Step 4
If a connection isn't established, restart your phone or tablet and launch the Facebook app or Facebook Messenger again.
Step 5
Reinstall the Facebook app or Facebook Messenger if none of these solutions fixes the connectivity problem. Often connectivity issues with individual apps can be remedied by downloading a new version of the affected application.
Fix Facebook Chat Connection Problems on Your Computer
Step 1
Check your computer's Internet connection. Open a new Web browser window and attempt to visit any website. If other websites fail to launch, check your modem and router and restart both devices, if necessary. Make sure there aren't any firewalls or virus-scanning applications set up to block connections to Facebook. Return to the Facebook website after you've established that your Internet connection is working properly.
Step 2
Click the Chat icon in the bottom-right corner of the Facebook website to turn chat on, if it's not turned on already.
Step 3
Click the Settings icon and select Advanced Settings to open the Advanced Chat Settings dialog.
Step 4
Verify that the person with whom you're trying to chat isn't listed in the Turn Off Chat For Only Some Friends field. If it is listed here, delete the name from this field and click Save.
Tip
The same applies for any lists of which the contact is a member. If the person is on your Close Friends list, for instance, and Close Friends are blocked from seeing you, this may cause chat connectivity problems.
Other Browser-Based Bugs and Issues
Issues with individual Web browsers can also lead to connectivity problems in Facebook chat. For more information on which browsers work best with Facebook, visit this page on Facebook's website.
Update your Web browser to the latest version compatible with your device.
Clear the cookies and cache in your Web browser. Occasionally these can prevent the browser from connecting properly with Facebook.
Also make sure that no rules have been created in the browser's security settings to prevent connections to Facebook.
