Facebook Tag Character Limits

Facebook's tag feature allows you to mention your Facebook friends by name and add a link to their profile. Depending on your friends' settings, Facebook will also send them a notification when you tag them. You can use the tag feature in wall posts, notes, pictures and comments; the limit on your tags will depend where you are posting them.
Tagging

The term "tags" refers to links you can insert into status updates and notes that connect to certain friends' profiles. Tagging first started with pictures, where you can still click on an individual in a photo and add his name to it. Not only will that picture become part of his photo album, but others will be able to see him labelled in the photo, too. Tags work in a similar way with notes, wall posts and comments; other Facebook users can click the link contained in the text that leads to the tagged person's profile.

Whom to Tag

You can tag only people who are existing friends on Facebook in notes or on photos. Even if someone is a friend of a friend, you won't be able to include him in tags until you're Facebook friends with him yourself. Some users can change their profile privacy settings to prevent other people tagging them in notes or photos, so it might not always be possible to tag all your friends on Facebook.

Limits

The limits for tags depend on where you are posting the tags. Photos don't carry a character limit for tags, so the length of the names tagged in the photo doesn't matter. However, you can tag a maximum of 50 people per photo. Tagging people in posts carries slightly different restrictions, as Facebook has no tagging limit, but all posts carry a character limit of 450 characters, which can include both plain text and tags.

Considerations

Before you tag other Facebook users or allow yourself to be tagged, establish your desired privacy settings. When you're tagged in a photo with other people, other Facebook users who aren't on your friends list might be able to see your photos and potentially learn sensitive information about you, such as what you look like and where you live. The same issue applies to notes and wall posts: Unless you've specified in your privacy settings that you don't want people who aren't your friends to be able to view your notes, they might be visible to others in the Facebook community.
