Added as a chat emoticon by Facebook in 2008, the shark emoticon is a nod to the 1949 horror-thriller "Jaws." The movie starred Roy Scheider as a police chief put in the perilous position of battling a man-eating great white shark. The shark emoticon features an image of a shark's head emerging out of the water. Although this emoticon is a favorite with Facebook chat users, it does not translate well into a textual emoticon for status or comment use.
