Facebook privacy settings can be used to adjust the visibility of content posted by members of the social network. There are times when you may see posts from members who are not your friends, both on your pages and your friends' pages. While you can control the posts that appear in your News Feed by adjusting your privacy settings, you have less control over the content you see on friends' pages. You do have some options for hiding and blocking posts you do not wish to see.
How the Facebook News Feed Works
The Facebook News Feed is the continuously updating list of content that appears in the central column of each user's home page. It contains everything from status updates and comments to photo uploads and links posted by you and your Facebook friends. If privacy settings allow for it, there are times when posts from Facebook members who are not your friends are visible to you. This is often the case when two members who are not friends share a mutual friend, and both comment on a photo, status update or other type of content.
Adjusting Privacy Settings
You can adjust your Facebook privacy settings to control the content that is visible to you. Sign in to your Facebook account and click the "Account" tab in the upper right corner of any page. Select "Privacy Settings" from the drop-down menu that appears. Click the "Customize Settings" link that appears below the "Sharing On Facebook" section. Scroll to the "Things Others Share" section and click the drop-down menu for the "Permission To Comment On Your Posts" option. Select your desired privacy setting to allow posts from "Everyone," "Friends Of Friends" or "Friends Only," or select the "Customize" setting to allow or restrict users on an individual basis. Note that the privacy setting you select will determine whether or not you will see content posted by Facebook members who are not your friends. Uncheck the "Enable" box for the "Friends Can Post On My Wall" option to restrict Facebook users, friends and non-friends, from posting content on your Wall. Note that doing so severely limits the Wall feature and may take away from your overall Facebook user experience.
Applying News Feed Filters
You can filter your News Feed to control the types of content that appear on your Wall. Sign in to your Facebook account and click the "Most Recent" option that appears at the top of your homepage next to the "News Feed" heading. Click it a second time to open a drop-down menu that contains a list of possible filters. You can filter your Wall to show only status updates, photos, links, Pages or questions, filter by friend lists (if you've set them up), or opt to hide or show posts from users on an individual basis. Note that you may still see content posted by non-friends, but applying a filter will limit such content.
Using the Facebook Block Feature
The Facebook Block feature allows you to completely restrict the visibility of content posted by Facebook users on an individual basis. Adding a Facebook member to your block list, friend or non-friend, removes all connections that exist between the two of you. This should be done only if necessary. Although it is reversible, the process of blocking encompasses all of Facebook and is quite restrictive. Once blocked, any content posted by a user is no longer visible to the member who initiated the block, and vice versa. If you share mutual friends and both you and the blocked user comment on the same status update or photo, your posts will not be visible to one another.
