Stop Facebook Social Plugins

Websites and blogs use Facebook social plugins to allow visitors to recommend and share content with their Facebook friends. The social plugin is a small icon or button on a Web page; clicking this button posts a link to the content on the user's Facebook profile page and home page. The plugin also displays the number of other people who have recommended or shared the content previously. If you or any of your Facebook friends have previously clicked the button, the social plugin might display your name or your friend's name. Although the plugin does not share personal information about you with the website, you can stop Facebook social plugins by logging out of your Facebook account before visiting websites that include them.

Launch your Web browser and go to Facebook. If you've already logged in to Facebook on a previous visit, this opens your Facebook home page.

Click the "Account" link in the top navigation menu.

Choose "Log Out" from the drop-down menu. This signs you out of Facebook and opens the main Facebook log in page.

Click the check box beside "Keep Me Logged In" under the username and password input fields to untick and deselect this option. This stops Facebook from automatically logging you in to the site each time you visit.

Go to the website that includes the Facebook social plugin. You'll still see the plugin button or icon, but it won't recognize you as a Facebook user and will no longer display any personalized information about your recommendations or those of your Facebook friends.
