Tips on Tracking Mobile Web

Mobile Web tracking studies the performance of mobile websites by gathering data on the activities, demographics, and general behavior of visitors -- such as pages visited, length of stay, language, location, traffic source and entry/exit points. These are all similar to the information measured for traditional Web analytics. Additional information is tracked for that is specific to mobile websites. This includes statistics on mobile devices accessing the mobile website, such as the mobile phone's model, manufacturer, mobile service provider and the user's preferred language. Companies offering mobile analytics services offer their own innovative techniques in how, what and what else they can track. Understanding who the visitors are and how they behave within a mobile site gives the company insight about how to improve the site's performance and the company's advertising/marketing strategies.

What to do
Prepare. Understand why you would like to track your mobile website. Know your budget. Determine how much time and energy you can devote to setting up the service.

Know the methods of gathering information available. Real-time analytics offer data extracted in real time. The traditional method of tracking requires at a few hours, sometimes 24 hours, before the statistics are available for viewing.

Decide between paid or free service. Paid services offer more features in the service they provide. Pricing vary from a fixed monthly/yearly cost to pricing based on page views per month or per year. Most paid services accounts also offer free accounts that can be upgraded to a paid account.

Choose a service provider. Compare service features. Consider how well they fit your needs/objectives and your budget. A short list of leading providers include:

a) Google analytics (google.com/analytics) -- free

b) AdMob (analytics.admob.com) -- free

c) Mixpanel (mixpanel.com) -- free and paid from $50/month; offers real-time analytics

d) Percent Mobile (percenmobile.com)- free and paid service priced at $99/year

e) Atomic Labs (atomiclabs.com) -- free and paid service priced per yearly page views; offers real-time analytics

f) Motally (motally.com) -- free and paid service. Contact them for a quote.

g) Bango (bango.com) - paid service priced at $49/month

h) Amethon (amethon.com) - paid service. Contact them for a quote.

Open an account. Have the account login information handy to install tracking code into your mobile site's template. This may not be necessary for a paid account, depending on the service provider.

Follow instructions. After opening the account, follow instructions to complete registration. Check your email account to click on the email verification link the service providers may send you. Follow the procedure to install the tracking code. Follow directions on how to check if installation was successful.

Log in and check statistics. Allow at least a week for statistics gathering to your mobile website. Understand the data gathered by checking the service provider's explanation. This explanation may be in the FAQ section, client's area or community forum. Contact the service provider for any difficulties.
