What Is Facebook Fanpage

Whether or not you are a member of Facebook, you may have some confusion over what constitutes a Facebook fan page. A fan page serves a completely different purpose on the social networking site than a profile page. Knowing exactly what that purpose is helps you determine whether you are interested in creating a fan page of your own.

The Basics
A Facebook fan page is designed to promote a business, brand, organization or celebrity. Unlike Facebook profiles, a fan page does not represent a single individual unless that person is a celebrity who is promoting himself. For example, a celebrity may have a personal profile page, which only certain people may become friends on as well as a fan page to promote the work he is doing. A fan page requires an administrator -- someone to manage the page. The administrator must be the official representative of the product, brand, celebrity or organization being promoted. However, the administrator can add additional people to assist in page management.

Getting Fans
Facebook makes a distinction between adding friends and adding fans. If you have a personal profile page, you can add up to 5,000 friends. You are allowed only one profile page. A fan page works differently since the entire purpose of the page is promotion. On a fan page, you can have as many fans as you want. As long as someone likes what you are promoting, he can become a fan of your page. You are allowed to have as many fan pages as you desire. This is beneficial if you have multiple businesses, products or brands to promote.

Importance
Regardless of your opinion about Facebook -- some people love it while some people refuse to join -- creating a fan page to promote your business can be quite beneficial. When people search for a product online, the search engine displays a fan page for the product if one exists, which results in increased online traffic for you. Creating a fan page is free, so cost isn't an issue. You can send updates to your fans about your products either on their Facebook walls or to their email addresses. If you determine that the fan page is not working for you, simply delete it. Getting rid of a fan page does not have any negative consequences for you regarding your Facebook status. If you ever want to create one again, you can.

Warning
If you already have a profile page, do not assume you can use it to promote any form of business, company or organization. Facebook states clearly in its guidelines that doing such is against policy, which is why the site created the fan page. Those who ignore these guidelines will have their Facebook privileges revoked with no guarantee of having them reinstated.
