The social media network Facebook includes a variety of tools for communicating with individuals on your "Friends" list, including sending direct messages and instant messaging. The instant messaging tool, known as Facebook Chat, is not error-free, though, and a yellow warning sign lets you know the tool is not working at the moment. Once the tool becomes available again, you can continue with your real-time chat.
Warning
The yellow exclamation point at the bottom-right corner of your Facebook screen indicates the Facebook Chat tool is experiencing an outage and you cannot use it at that moment. The problem could be an Internet issue, an internal problem with Facebook's configuration or a problem Facebook may not be aware of at the moment. Click the "X" on the open chat box to close the tool, if it is open, and continue to use the website's other functions and tools.
Contacting Facebook
To report the outage to Facebook if in the Chat tool, click the link in the wording "To submit a report about this, please click here." Enter a message in the "Description" box stating that you received a yellow exclamation point error and the chat doesn't work or similar wording, then click the "Submit" button. This sends a trouble ticket to the website's technical department and they will look into the problem. The yellow warning problem may be resolved in a matter of minutes or a matter of hours.
Follow-Up
You will not receive a message from Facebook when the problem is resolved. Look at the bottom-right corner of the website's screen to see if the yellow exclamation point is gone. If it is gone, you can now use the chat tool. You will see a round green circle next to individuals' names on your "Friends" list that are currently online. Click a name to start a chat session.
