Facebook doesn't allow you to simply type a user's email address to find that person's Facebook profile. Instead, you use your own email address book and Facebook will locate profiles for your contacts. This makes the process of searching for friends and adding them to your friends list on Facebook quick and convenient. To search for someone in particular who isn't presently one of your contacts, you simply add the person to your address book and then perform the search.
Browse to Facebook and sign in to your account. Click "Friends" on the left side of your homepage. Click "Find Friends" from the drop-down menu below.
Select your email provider, whether it's Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo! or another Web-based service. Choose "Other Email" if your provider is not listed. If you use a desktop email client such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird, click "Other Tools." Click "Upload Contact File" and Facebook will extract your contacts using a program called Friend Finder. Your contacts will be uploaded for you to peruse.
Enter your username and password for your Web-based email account. Facebook will not save your password but providing it is necessary so Facebook can access your address book.
Browse through the generated list of contacts that Facebook has retrieved from your private address book. You can send friend requests to those who have Facebook accounts and you can send Facebook invitations to those who are not currently on the social networking site.
Click the Facebook logo in the upper left corner to exit to your homepage when you are finished.
