Facebook status updates and posts keep you connected with all of your friends near and far at the same time. Facebook chat is a feature allowing you to talk in real-time to people on your friends list if you're both signed in to your Facebook accounts. You can also liven up the chat by typing a combination of letters and symbols to make funny faces, or emoticons, while you're chatting using just the keyboard.
Log in to your Facebook account.
Click the "Chat" bar at the bottom-left side of the page.
Click on the user name for the friend you want to chat with.
Type the combination of symbols for a funny face in the chat box text field and press "Enter." For example, type ";)" without the quotes to send a wink. For the following types of faces, type the corresponding characters: tongue, ":p"; kiss, ":*"; sunglasses, "8-|"; ":("; heart, "<3"; Pacman, ":v"; glasses, "8)"; doh, ">:-("; devil, "3:)"; cat smile, ":3"; big smile, ":D"; angel, "O:)"; err, ":/"; and gasp is ":o."
