Although sharing and commenting on status updates and feed items are central features of Facebook for most users, Facebook Chat is a handy additional feature for real-time communication. Chat works similarly to other Internet instant messengers, with a basic interface allowing you to send short messages back and forth like a conversation. Once you've logged into Facebook, a live chat with friends is only a click away.
Log into Facebook and click the "Chat" tab at the bottom of the browser.
Click "Options" and select "Pop out Chat" if you want to chat in a separate pop-up window.
Click a friend's name on the list of online contacts to start a conversation.
Type your message in the box at the bottom of the chat window and press "Enter" to send it. Responses appear above.
Click "Options" and click "Play Sound for New Messages" to receive a sound notification any time someone sends you a new chat message.
Click "Options" and then "Go offline" to log out of Facebook chat.
