How to Size Mouthguard

If you play any type of contact sport, a mouth guard is an absolute safety necessity. If you don't have a strong fit with your mouth guard, it is almost the same as not having any type of mouth protection at all. The good news is that sizing your mouth guard is quite easy. Whether you have a brand new unformatted mouth guard or an old mouth guard that no longer fits properly, you can achieve a perfect fit in less than 10 minutes.

Insert the small handle or tether onto your mouth guard. You should have been provided with one at purchase. If you don't have one, skip to Step 2.

Pour water into your sauce pan so it can be boiled on the stove. Once you've brought the pan of water to a boil, remove it from from the stove.

Submerge the mouth guard into the water. Hold it underwater so the tether is outside the water and the mouth guard is in the water. If you don't have a tether or small handle, use a pair of metal tongs to submerge the mouth guard. Keep it in the boiled water for 90 seconds.

Remove the mouth guard from the water and hold it under a faucet of cold water. Cool it under the faucet for 1 to 2 seconds.

Place the rubbery mouth guard in your mouth and bite down hard with your whole jaw. Leave the tether or small handle in your mouth while biting. Make sure your bite feels comfortable and strong. Suck the excess water from the mouth guard while biting. Maintain the biting action for 20 seconds. After 20 seconds it needs to cool down to harden the mold.

Remove the mouth guard from your mouth and once again run it under cold water from the faucet. Leave it under the cold water for 30 seconds. If you don't have a tether or small handle, you can gently remove it with your fingers and run it under the faucet. Be careful not to alter its shape before it has cooled.

Place the now hardened mouth guard back in your mouth. Clench your jaw tightly. If it feels comfortable, you are done. If it feels like your teeth are out of alignment with the mold on the mouth piece, repeat Steps 2 through 7 to get a perfect fit.
