What Is Google DNS

Google DNS is an alternative domain name service that offers high speeds and enhanced security. Google hosts the DNS and it's available globally. A domain name system is a database that's used to translate text Web addresses to the Internet Protocol address associated with a given domain name. Most Internet users use the DNS maintained by their Internet service provider, but depending on the ISP, Google's offering may provide faster service, enabling you to more quickly navigate to the websites you enter in your browser address bar.

Purpose
Google DNS is maintained to provide you with access to an alternative domain name system database in the event that your ISP DNS is slow or lacks security protocols offered by Google DNS. The service was launched in 2009 and is available to all Internet users for free.

Usage
The DNS addresses used by Google DNS are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4. If you want to use Google DNS, you simply need to enter the Google DNS IP address in the appropriate field from the Internet settings window on your operating system. You can also directly enter the IP address in your router, ensuring that all devices connected to your network use Google DNS. Google offers extensive online help instructions for configuring Google DNS on all operating system at code.google.com.

Security
One of the most common threats that Internet users face is domain name spoofing. This is accomplished when hackers take control of DNS zones and re-route requests to websites they maintain in an effort to cull personal data from users. Thanks to Google's tech and security acumen, its DNS servers are virtually impenetrable. Another DNS threat that Google is mostly immune to is denial of service attacks. While ISP-maintained DNS servers are limited by the companies' resources, Google's near infinite resources allow it to maintain redundant DNS so that the servers never go down.

Performance
Independent testing by Google, Lifehacker and "PC Magazine" indicates that Google DNS is generally faster than alternative DNS servers. Google DNS leverages technology used by the Google search engine to quickly find websites that match your search queries, including advanced caching, rapid database look-ups and pre-fetching, to quickly translate typed addresses to the proper IP address when navigating the Web.
