Tips to Bump Volleyball

The bump in volleyball usually is the first contact a team makes with the ball once it comes over the net. Also called a forearm pass, the bump passes the ball to the setter, who then sets up the attack shot for the spiker. The entire body is involved in a well-executed bump; skill, power and agility are needed to fully master the shot.

Move into proper position to receive the ball and hit the bump shot. Separate your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Place your dominant foot slightly in front of the other foot so that you are in a staggered stance. Bend your knees to 90 degrees.

Create a platform with your forearms. Form a fist with your left hand with the thumb on top. Cover the left fist with the right fist; the base of the thumbs should cross. Extend your arms straight in front of your body.

Move toward the ball, rather than waiting for the ball to come to you. Back up if you need to, as the ball should be hit when it is in front of your body. Swing your arms upward when the ball is at waist height. Avoid using your hands or fists when making contact with the ball; the contact point should be approximately 6 inches above your wrists on the forearm. Keep your eyes on the ball throughout the play.

Point your hands to where the ball will be passed, which is toward the setter. Straighten your legs as you swing your arms up to shoulder height for the follow through. The power from your legs can give momentum to your shot and help you guide the ball to the right location.
