High School Christmas Art Craft

Although holiday art projects are most popular for elementary school children, creating Christmas art projects is fun for kids of all ages, include high schoolers. Traditional decorative Christmas-themed items that are handmade by students make great gifts for parents and friends. Assign high school Christmas projects in late November or early December, giving students the chance to finish the projects and have them graded within enough time to bring them home as gifts.

Ornaments
While Popsicle sticks and glue ornament crafts work wonders with elementary school children, high school students can work with glass objects such as ornament balls. Students can decorate them by using glue and glitter, but should be encouraged to use more inventive methods of decorating. For example, small items like popcorn kernels, beads, feathers or garland can be placed inside clear glass balls, making them heavier and more interesting. Glass ornaments can also be covered with papier mache, using newspaper or magazine cutouts.

Christmas Frames
Rather than use Popsicle sticks, obtain blank wooden frames to eliminate the base work so that high school students can work more on the decorative aspect of the project. Students can use magazine cutouts and shellac them onto the frame. Older high school students may be able to use broken glass pieces or mirror pieces to make a mosaic frame. Using glass pieces that are red, green and white would add to the Christmas theme. Ribbons and glitter can finish off the frame.

Christmas Wreaths
A Christmas wreath can be made using fake, plastic wreaths or real pine wreaths. Either way, the project will let high-schoolers create a festive gift to hang on their doors at home during the holiday season. Use hot glue guns to glue pine cones, seashells or other items found in nature to the wreath. Tell students to add small ornaments or small, lightweight trinkets they may want to bring from home.

High school students also could make a pretzel wreath, which could be very easily broken by younger children. Students start out by gluing large pretzels side-by-side, overlapping a little, in a circle. Glue a second layer on top of the first layer to add stability. Pour clear glue over the entire wreath to shellac it and make it sturdier. Add a ribbon.

Poetry
While an art project often consists of glue and paint, poetry is also art and can make a unique gift for Christmas. Students can think about what Christmas means to them and write a poem about it. The poem can be put into a frame (maybe a handmade one) or paired with a handmade Christmas card.

Pillow
A few pieces of felt and some stuffing can turn into an original Christmas pillow in just a few high school class periods. Simply provide high school students with different colors of felt and tell them to make a simple pattern, such as a Christmas tree. Students can cut two pieces into identical trees, sew all but 2 in. of the sides together and pack the inside with stuffing. After sewing those last couple of inches, the pillow is done. Add ornaments with needle and thread.
