Valentine Day Art Activities for 3 to 4-Year-Olds

Any preschool teacher will tell you that Valentine's Day art is almost as special to children as Christmas and their birthdays. Make this holiday memorable for the preschoolers in your life by planning entertaining and simple Valentine's Day art activities. Try a fancy new painting technique and let the kids work on their cutting and coloring to make Valentine's Day keepsakes you will treasure for years.

Paper Hug

Craft an adorable paper hug in the shape of a heart with two arms reaching out for an embrace. Teach children to draw and cut out a heart.

Things You'll Need

Construction paper in Valentine's Day colors, such as red, pink, purple and white
Googly eyes
Black yarn or black chenille stems
Craft glue
Scissors
Crayons, markers, colored pencils
Step 1
Choose a color for the heart and lay the sheet of construction paper in front of you on your work surface.

Step 2
To draw the heart, start by drawing two 4-inch circles right next to each other. Draw an inverted triangle. Make the base of the triangle a horizontal line that goes through the middle of the two circles, and put the point of the triangle approximately 4 inches below the circles. Draw soft curves from the tip of the triangle to the circle to round out the sides. Outline the shape of the heart with a dark crayon or marker. Cut out the heart.

Tip

Resist the temptation to do too much of the drawing and cutting yourself. Small children are just learning these skills. While their artwork may not be perfect, it's all the more special because they did it themselves.
Step 3
Choose another color of construction paper, and cut two 2-by-8-inch strips from the paper.

Step 4
Fold the strips of paper accordion style. Lay them vertically on your work surface. Starting at the top, fold the edge over 1 inch. Flip the paper strip over so that the folded edge is facing the table and fold the top edge down 1 inch again. Continue this process until your have folded the entire length of each strip.

Step 5
Glue one strip to each side of the heart so they look like two arms sticking out of the heart.

Step 6
Glue googly eyes on the face of the heart. Apply a thin line of glue in the shape of a smile, and glue on a piece of black chenille stem or yarn.

Step 7
Draw and cut out two smaller hearts using the method described above. Glue to the ends of the arms for hands.

Step 8
Decorate with crayons, markers or colored pencils if desired.

Make a Heart Wreath

Things You'll Need

Paper plate
Construction paper in Valentine's Day colors, such as pink, red and purple
Crayons, markers or colored pencils
Scissors
Craft glue
Hole punch
12-inch length of yarn
Step 1
Cut out the middle of the paper plate to create a ring. This will be the base of your wreath.

Step 2
Draw and cut out hearts in different sizes and colors using the method described above.

Step 3
Glue the hearts to the paper plate wreath form, covering it completely.

Step 4
Punch a hole in the top of the wreath. Attach a loop of thread for hanging.

Paint Resist Splatter Painting

This combination of paint resist and splatter painting yields impressive results. However the process is deceptively simple, even for preschoolers.

Things You'll Need

Sheets of watercolor paper, 16-by-20-inch or 18-by-24-inch
1 small plastic cup for each color of paint
Blue painter's tape, .94-inch
Acrylic or tempera paints in Valentine's Day colors, such as pink, red and purple
Craft paint brushes in various sizes
Warning

This is a messy project, so either cover your work surface with a plastic table cloth or take your project outside.
Step 1
Make the shape of a heart or spell out the word "LOVE"with small pieces of tape on the water color paper.

Tip

Write the word "LOVE" and make a drawing of a heart on a separate piece of paper from which children can copy.
Step 2
Fill each cup with a small amount of paint.

Step 3
Dip paint brushes in the paint. Shake the brush over the paper to allow splatters of paint to cover the paper. Encourage children to use many different colors and to cover the whole page with splatters of paint.

Step 4
Allow the paint to dry completely. This will take several hours.

Step 5
Gently remove the pieces of tape to reveal the heart or letters.
