Thanksgiving Cornucopia Kids Crafts

Although many kids know about the pilgrims and the Native Americans, they may not realize that Thanksgiving art is traditionally a time of thanks for a bountiful harvest. The cornucopia symbolizes this idea, as a horn overflowing with fruits and grains. Kids can make Thanksgiving crafts that revolve around this Thanksgiving symbol.

Thanksgiving Placecards
Even the youngest kids will enjoy making this craft, which you can use as a place card at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Just cut a piece of construction paper into the shape of a place card, and fold it in half so that it stands on its own. Then show kids how to glue a bugle-shaped snack onto the place card, horizontally. They can then arrange fruit-shaped cereal inside of the bugle-shaped snack and glue it all together. Above the horizontal cornucopia, they should write the name of the person whose place card it is.

Sugar-Cone Centerpiece
A sugar cone (the pointed type of ice cream cone) is the perfect shape for a cornucopia. To make a centerpiece out of a sugar cone, simply place a doily in the center of the table, lay a sugar cone on the doily, and fill the inside of the sugar cone with white icing. Then stick fruit-shaped candies into the icing so they stay inside of the cone. Lay several fruit-shaped candies on the doily so they look like they are spilling out of the cone. You can also use candy corn to fill this cornucopia.

Authentic Cornucopia
This cornucopia, which is more authentic-looking, requires the use of manila rope and jute twine, both of which you can find at a hardware store. For the base, roll a paper plate into the shape of a cone, using masking tape to secure it. Kids can glue one layer of manila rope around the opening, and hold it in place until it dries. Then they can apply glue to the bottom section of the cone and wrap the jute twine around and around it, applying more glue as needed. Show them how to tuck the last bit of twine underneath itself for a more seamless ending. Kids can then insert a coffee filter into the cone's mouth and fill it with small fruits, nuts and other foods.
