Best Easy Halloween Crafts

Just because your toddler is only 2 years old doesn't mean he can't have fun making impressive-looking crafts for Halloween. With a little help, your budding artist can create spookily fun ghosts, jack-o'-lanterns, bats, spiders, mummies and monsters that you can display for many Halloweens to come.

 Handprint Ghosts

Things You'll Need

Black paper
White tempera or finger paint
Googly eyes
White glue
Black permanent marker
These handprint ghosts are delightfully fun for 2-year-olds to make, and they provide adorable Halloween decorations. Paint your child's hand with white paint, and let him stamp several hand shapes onto the black paper. The fingers will become the bottoms of the ghosts. After the paint dries, put drops of glue on the heels of the palm prints, and let your toddler adhere the googly eyes. Help him draw mouths with the black marker.

Yarn Jack-o-Lantern

Things You'll Need

Wax paper
Black paper
Orange yarn
Green pipe cleaner
White glue
Permanent black marker
Safety scissors
Draw a pumpkin shape on a sheet of waxed paper and put white glue around the outline. Cut a length of orange yarn, and have your child put it in the glue around the pumpkin's perimeter. Have your toddler use safety scissors to help you cut 10 to 12 more lengths of orange yarn approximately the same length.

Soak the yarn in glue, and have him lay each piece inside the pumpkin shape, swirling and overlapping the yarn to create a mesh effect. Draw jack-o'-lantern eyes, nose and mouth on the black paper. Cut them out, and let your child glue them to the pumpkin face. Allow the craft to dry for a day or two.

Then peel the jack-o'-lantern face from the wax paper. String the pipe cleaner through the top to serve as a stem and hanger. Hang on a window from a suction hook or on the wall.

Spoon Bat Puppet

Things You'll Need

Wooden spoon
Orange and white tempera paint
White glue
Googly eyes
Permanent black marker
Sheet of black craft foam
A cute bat puppet becomes both toy and decoration. Have your child paint the spoon orange. Let it dry; then help him glue two googly eyes on the back of the spoon. Cut two small triangles for ears and bat-shaped wings from the black foam. Let your toddler glue the ears to the top of the spoon and the wings to the back of the handle. Encourage him to draw a mouth with the marker, and then help him add fangs with white paint.

Egg Carton Spiders

Things You'll Need

Cardboard egg carton
Black and red tempera paint
Googly eyes
4 black pipe cleaners for each spider
White glue
Scissors
Hole punch
Thread or yarn
Make a classic spider craft toddler-friendly by using a single pipe cleaner for each pair of legs. Cut individual egg cups off the carton, and trim off any edges and flaps so it sits flat. Have your child paint the cups black. When it's dry make four holes in each side with the hole punch -- or use scissors to poke small holes.

Warning

Don't allow a 2-year-old to use the hole punch or poke holes with scissors.
Have your little one thread a pipe cleaner through each hole on one side and out the corresponding hole on the other side, ensuring equal amounts stick out on either side. Bend the ends of the cleaners to look like legs. Put glue spots on the face so your toddler can glue on the eyes. Paint the mouths red. If you want to hang the spiders, poke another hole in the top and add a loop of thread or yarn.

Toilet Roll Mummies

Things You'll Need

Toilet paper roll
White tissue paper
White yarn
Googly eyes
White glue
Paintbrush, toddler-friendly with a fat handle
If you always thought mummies were scary, these charming little guys will have you seeing them in a new light. Show your child how tear the tissue paper into long strips, each about 2 inches wide. Then encourage him to paint glue all over the outside of the paper rolls. Together wrap the mummies: Adhere one end of a tissue paper strip onto the now glue-covered roll, and slowly wrap the strip around the roll, angling it slightly so that it twists down the tube.

If any of the tube remains uncovered, add another strip of tissue paper. Glue an end of white yarn to the tube and have your child wrap it around the roll several times, and then glue the loose end down too. Each mummy should have yarn wrapped around it about four to 10 times for the best effect. Add two dots of glue to the mummy's face, and let your child stick on the googly eyes.

This monster craft can get a little messy, but it allows your little artist to be very creative. From the green construction paper, have your child draw a monster body shape such as an oval or rectangle. Using safety scissors, help your 2-year-old cut out the body shape, as well as four strips for arms and legs.

Have your toddler glue the monster's body and limbs on to the black or white construction paper. Put some glue on the monster's body, and let your child stick on pieces of balled-up green tissue paper. Add more glue as needed while he continues adding tissue paper in layers.

Use the scraps of paper to make eyes, nose, mouth, horns, claws and other features that you cut out. Add spots of glue to the monster, and let your child paste the features on. Let the creation dry thoroughly before hanging it up.
