Homemade Halloween Mask

Making your own mask is an art that will give you a unique costume for Halloween. No one else will look just like you! The type of mask you choose will determine what supplies you'll need. First decide on the theme for your mask, and then choose the best way to create it.

Deciding what style of mask you'd like to make can also help determine the best supplies to make it. Masks that are predominately one color and cover the top half of your face, like a superhero mask, work well with felt. But, a mask with lots of small details or many colors that covers your whole face might be better with papier mache. Look at the examples below to see what might work best for you.

Felt

Animals: cat, bat, mouse, etc.
Superhero: Batman, Catwoman, Wolverine, The Flash, etc.

Decorations
Steps

Use a picture of your character or your animal to decide what shape the mask should be.
Trace the shape onto felt (large enough to cover the top half of your face) and cut out. Repeat so you have two identical pieces.
Glue the two pieces together to make a sturdy base. Let dry.
Cut out two ovals for the eyes.
With needle and thread, secure the elastic to each side of your mask.
Cut pieces of felt in different colors and glue to your mask to decorate. Or glue on feathers or sequins and decorate with puffy paint.

Supplies

Newspaper in 1-inch strips
Computer paper in 1-inch strips
Flour
Water
8-inch balloon
Large mug
Plastic wrap
Plastic tablecloth
Mixing bowl
Steps

Cover your work surface with the tablecloth.
Cover the mug with plastic wrap.
Blow up the balloon to the size of your head and place on the mug to hold steady while you work.
Mix 3 parts water to 1 part flour in a mixing bowl until the mixture is creamy.
Dip newspaper strips in the mixture and apply to one side of the balloon to make your mask. Let each layer dry completely before applying the next. Repeat until the mask has a solid foundation (at least 3-4 layers).
For the last layer, dip computer paper in mixture and apply to mask. White paper makes it easier to paint the mask.
Let dry overnight.
Decorate Your Papier Mache Mask
Supplies

Craft knife
Paint and paintbrushes
6-7 inches of 1/8-inch elastic
Stapler
Steps

Pop the balloon to remove your mask.
With the craft knife, cut away uneven papier mache around the edges.
Hold the mask to your face and mark where eye holes should be. Cut two ovals for your eyes.
Paint your mask to look like your character, animal, etc. Let dry.
Cut two small holes near your nose for ventilation. Do this last so you can place the holes where you painted a nose.
Staple the elastic to each side of your mask to hold it firmly in place.
