Make Bathtub Toys with Sponges

Bath time will never be the same. You don't need to break the bank to bring a brand new tub of toys to your child's bath-time adventures. You can craft a variety of sponge toys to make bath day more bearable for your clean-phobic youngster or make the toys at his next birthday party celebration to keep the kids occupied with a craft that they can bring home when the party's done.

Lay three different color sponges on your work surface and cut each into three to four lengthwise strips. Each strip should be approximately 1/2- to 3/4-inch wide.

Arrange the strips side by side, alternating different colors. Gather all of the strips together by squeezing them around the center in one hand. Adjust any strips to make sure they are evenly aligned.

Move your fingers down slightly and wrap the zip tie around the center of the bunch. Insert one end of the zip tie into the other and pull tightly to cinch the center of the sponge strips. As you do so, the sponge strips will fan out into a spiky ball shape. Now your youngster has a new toy to throw around the bath and to perhaps even make getting clean a little more fun.

He'll be too busy playing to worry about getting cleaned up..Sailboats
Place one sponge on your work surface and draw a house shape on the sponge with a marker or piece of chalk. You'll need a flat bottom, two sides and a peaked roof shape. Cut out the shape.

Cut 2 pieces of duct tape in any color you like. Make each piece about 5 inches long by 3 inches wide. Arrange one piece on top of the other, sticky sides together, and press them together to create the sail.

Make a 1/2-inch-wide slit at either end of the sail with a utility knife and slide the wooden craft stick into the slits to create the sail’s mast. Use an extra little piece of duct tape to secure the sail to the mast if necessary.

Make a slit in the center of one side of the sponge boat with the utility knife. Make the slit equivalent to the width of the wooden craft stick mast and slide the mast into the slit to complete the sailboat.

Sponge Shapes
Draw or print different shapes, such as hearts and animals. Help your youngster work on learning literacy and math during bath time by making large letter and number templates, too. Cut out the templates.

Lay a variety of different color foam sponges on your work surface and place one template on top of each sponge. You can use a piece of tape or a sewing pin to secure the template to the sponge.

Cut out each shape with scissors and enjoy. Encourage your child to wet the sponges and try creating a scene on the bathtub wall.
