These art necklaces are so much fun both to make and to wear! The kids will love creating their own using their own initial and picking the colors of the cord and the clay. This is the perfect craft to make this summer to help pass the time while taking a break from the heat. They are really easy to make and they make great gifts for little friends, too.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
To make your own, you'll need clay, cord, a roller, alphabet cookie cutters, and an awl. All of these can easily be found at your local craft store!
Step 2: Knead and Roll the Clay
Start by kneading the clay. It starts off kind of hard, and you want it to be on the softer side. Once it's warmed, use the roller to roll out the clay evenly and push the alphabet cookie cutter into the clay to make the monogram initial.
Step 3: Bake the Clay
Then, peel up the clay and gently place the letter on a glass baking dish. You can create the hole for the cord before cooking or directly after while it's still warm and flexible. Next, follow the directions on your clay packaging to bake and harden the clay. Generally, it's 275 degrees for 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the clay.
Step 4: Create the Necklace
Once the initials are cooked and cooled, string through the cord and tie it off! You can tie it off by the base of the letter to keep the letter laying flat while it's being worn. Then tie off the top to create the necklace and you're done!
