Google Voice is a telecommunications service released by Google in 2009. Users of Google Voice are assigned a new phone number and access to a Web-based voicemail service, which is accessible via both smartphone app and Web browser. Google Voice gives users many options for managing their phones, but one of the most useful features is the ability to forward calls from their Voice number to their mobile phone, work phone and home phone all at the same time.
Forwarding Numbers
When you first register for Google Voice, you are given a variety of new phone numbers to choose from. The number that you choose becomes your primary phone number. Once you have your new number, you can then assign up to six forwarding numbers to your account. When someone calls your new Google Voice number, their call is then forwarded to the phones you have set up calls to be forwarded to.
Temporary Forwarding
One feature of Google Voice is that users can add temporary forwarding numbers. If you are on vacation or on a business trip, you can add the number to the place where you'll be staying to your Google Voice forwarding list. This can be done through the Google Voice Web interface or by accessing your voicemail using any phone and accessing the main settings menu. You can also remove temporary numbers using the same method.
Shared Forwarding Numbers
If two Google Voice users share a home or office phone number, they can both forward Google Voice calls to that line by adding the same forwarding number to each user's account using the Google Voice Web interface.
Forwarding Options
Google Voice can forward calls to practically any home phone, work phone, desk phone or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) line. Google Voice users can also send and receive calls using their Gmail account in a Web browser. This feature can be disabled by accessing the Google Voice Settings menu in the Web interface, navigating to the Phones tab and unchecking Google Chat.
