If you've ever wanted an alternate email address, create one using Gmail's automatic aliasing feature. Without setting up any new accounts, you can give anyone a Gmail alias that consists of any name you like. You may find this ability useful when signing up at sites that request an email address that promise not to send you spam. Simply give a Gmail alias, and filter out unwanted messages if they arrive. You can also give friends a different Gmail alias that marks their messages as "Important." You already have the ability to use this feature. You simply need to learn how to format your Gmail alias names.
Log on to any email service such as Yahoo, Gmail or Windows Live Hotmail. Compose a new message.
Type the following text into the email message's "To" field:
UserName+Alias@Gmail.com
Replace "UserName" with your Gmail user name. Replace "Alias" with an alias name you wish to associate with that user name. For instance, to associate the alias "Business" with the user name "John," type the following into the "To" field:
Fred+Business@Gmail.com
Add a few words to the message's body and send the message.
Log on to Gmail with the username you used in the previous step, and click "Inbox." Your new messages appear. The message you sent to the Gmail alias appears in your inbox.
Tips & Warnings
Filter incoming alias email by clicking the "Create a Filter" button in the upper right corner of your Gmail page. The "Create a Filter" page appears. Type the alias you created in the "To" text box," then click "Next Step" to view the "Choose Action" page. This page contains a list of actions Gmail can take when an alias arrives. Put a check mark next to actions you wish to use. For instance, if you want all messages from the alias to skip the Inbox, check that option. On the other hand, if you would like Gmail to flag those messages as important, check that option. Click "Create Filter" after making your selections.
