Automatically Delete Old Messages from Gmail

If you don't clean out your inbox regularly, it can quickly fill up with messages you no longer need. Gmail offers a feature called filters that allows you to manage your incoming messages automatically. Rather than have to go through and delete each individual message you want to get rid of, you can create a filter in your Gmail account to automatically delete messages received before a specified date.

Sign into your Gmail account.

Click "Create a filter," located next to the "Search the Web" button at the top of the page.

Enter "before:yyyy/mm/dd" into the "Has the words:" space in the "Create a Filter" box. Fill in the cutoff date. For example, if you want emails from before June 4, 2009 deleted, enter "before:2009/06/04." You must enter the date in the proper format.

Click "Test Search" to see which messages currently in your inbox fit the filter terms.

Click "Next Step."

Select "Delete" from the list of actions.

Click the checkbox next to "Also apply filter to x conversations below," where "x" represents the number of messages you already have, to ensure the filter applies to messages already in Gmail and not just new ones.

Click "Create Filter." Any emails that fit the criterion of your filter are deleted.
