If you use Gmail's Web interface to send, receive and manage your email, you can use its built-in spell check feature to correct your spelling. If the spell check feature no longer appears, it is likely because you have set Gmail to use the simple HTML interface rather than its standard, more robust interface. Provided your browser supports the standard interface, you can switch to it quickly using a small link at the bottom of the Gmail screen.
Standard Mode
Make sure that your Gmail account is set to display in "standard" mode rather than in basic HTML. Gmail's basic HTML mode loads more quickly and is compatible with a wider range of browsers and devices, but it does not support advanced features like spell check. Scroll to the bottom of the Gmail page and look for the small "Gmail view" setting. If "Standard" isn't already selected, click it now. If you receive an error claiming that your browser does not support standard mode, check Gmail's list of supported browsers at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6557.
Compose Mail
Click the "Compose Mail" button in Gmail's left pane to open a new message. Enter some text in the message field to test the spell check with -- include a mix of correctly and incorrectly spelled words. Don't enter a recipient or subject line to run this test, because you won't be sending the message to anyone.
Check Spelling
Click the "Check Spelling" link above the top right corner of the message body field. Words that don't appear in Gmail's dictionary will appear highlighted in red; words that do will appear normally. Click a red word to view a pop-up menu with a list of spelling suggestions and an "Edit Word" option. When you're done, click "Resume Editing" to return to the normal mail composition mode.
Other Languages
By default, Gmail uses the dictionary corresponding to the language in which you view the Gmail interface. If you want to check spelling in a different language without switching languages for the entire interface, click the arrow next to "Check Spelling" to bring up a list of languages, then click the language you want. Once you've selected a language, click "Check Spelling" just as you would otherwise. To return the language settings to normal, bring up the menu again and click "Auto."
