Some people like to use their Google accounts for social networking, while others prefer to keep their personal information private. A Google account gives you access to a variety of features, including Google's Web-based email service, Gmail. If you are concerned about how much of your information is seen by other people on the Internet, you can keep most of your personal details private. Your display name must remain public, but all other profile information can be easily hidden.
Click the gear-shaped icon in the upper right corner of the Gmail page to open the Settings menu. Select the "Mail Settings" option from the drop-down menu. By default, the "General" tab will load.
Set the "My Picture" option to "Visible only to people I can chat with." This will hide your profile picture from everyone but your approved chat contacts. Scroll down and click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page.
Click on the "Accounts and Import" tab and look for the "Change Account Settings" section. Click the "Other Google Account Settings" link. A new browser tab opens.
Click the "Edit Profile" link within the new tab. Your Google Profile will be loaded. If your profile contains no information, no further action is required. Otherwise, click on a particular profile item (such as "Occupation" or "Home") to edit your privacy settings. Once you click on an item, a privacy setting dialog will appear. Select "Only You" to keep that item private. If you do not want your Google Profile to appear in Web search results, click the "Search Visibility" section to disable this option.
